ACETO, DON --- Collectible folk, animation influenced, and whimsical humor style fine art painter, Don Aceto. An example of his work includes a humorous piece of a little plane holding a tube that reads "Titanic" and crashing through a lighthouse and knocking the top off. There is a sign in the landscape that reads "this famous old lighthouse has survived over 36 tidal waves and 108 school tours". His early works often had bright yellow and orange hues heavily influenced by animation art. Signed his works "Aceto".

AINSLIE, HORTENCE --- Active in Los Angeles, California in the mid 20th Century. Works were from the studio of "Ainslie Hortence, 5220 Ellenwood PL. LA, CA 90041". The painting known is titled "Overcast" and is done in a loose impressionist style.

AKINS, HAL (b1924) --- Laguna Beach California mid 20th Century watercolorist. Taught art for many years in Laguna Beach. Board Member of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts and showed works for many years at the Sawdust Festival. Member of the National Watercolor Society. BANKS, EULALIE (1895-1999) --- Signed her works "Eulalie". Painted country scene landscape with house and girl returning home, church landscape scenes, nostalgic views of the neighborhood, California landscape - historical places. Eulalie Banks was mostly known for her illustration work for children's books (1940s). She was known to have illustrated over fifty books for children and painted fine art in her leisure. BEAUVAIS, CHARLES --- (died 1976) Charles Beauvais painted works that could be described as similar to the style of Paul Blaine Henrie. He was known to have been active from Laguna Beach, California in the late 1960s and early 70s part of the 20th Century. Many of his works are signed simply "Beauvais". He often titled and signed his works on the back of the canvas as well. Most of his works were of docked boat scenes, boats at sea, and modernist views of Laguna Beach - stairway to the beach and pier scenes. Mid Century California modernist.

BERAN, LENORE --- Studied at the Art League of Los Angeles. Known to have studied under Hal Reed and Ron Labyorteaux. She was the past President of the Burbank Art Association. Active in North Hollywood from her past gallery located at 6026 Laurel Canyon (North Hollywood, Calif.). Lenore Beran sold her work from her gallery and became well known in the mid to later part of the 20th Century. Listed in various art reference materials such as Samuels, Burbank Art Association, San Fernando Valley Art Club. Signed her work "Lenore Beran". Many of her works also contain the artist address label and studio/gallery card.

BERG, CHET --- Active in El Cajon, California and had a art gallery studio in Balboa Park (San Diego). Active as an artist in the Spanish Village area of San Diego. His work includes California missions, landscape, and plein air desert landscapes. Many of his works are desert paintings, one titled verso, "Sand Dunes at Indian Wells - Flowers are Verbena, Gold Cups, and Primrose - C.E. Berg, El Cajon, Calif." Signed many of his works "Berg". BERING, SAMUEL --- Painted impressionist landscapes in San Diego in the early part of the 20th Century. According to his artist stamp verso he was a working Optometrist and painted fine art in his leisure. Signed work "S. Bering".

BERRY, GLENN --- Active in Humboldt County. Born in 1929 and was known as a California expressionist; Painted abstracts in the early 1960s. According to art historian Edan Hughes, Berry was a founder of the art department at Humboldt State University. Also listed in Who's Who in American Art and Painters Behind Painters by Thomas Howe.

BEYMER --- Likely a California painter. Active in the 1940s. One of the works is of a snowy mountain landscape done in a tonalist softly painted impressionist style. Signed "Beymer 1943".

BIXLER, WILLIAM A. --- Speed painter. According to family member this is not the same artist as the William Bixler in referenced online. Active in Colorado as a sign, house painter, and photographic studio painter. In 1905 moved to Moundsville, West Virginia and later lived in Anderson, Indiana. He became known as "The Riley Artist" for painting many copies of "The Ole Swimming Hole". An example by this particular Bixler artist is a small nocturne painting done in oil on wood slab. Also known to have taught in Pomona, California in the 1920s -which may be why this particular work was located near Pomona, California. William Bixler was an ordained minister and often included religious text into his paintings.

BLAIR, WILLIAM A. --- San Diego school. Painted an impressionist painting in the mid 1940s. One of his works reads, "Red Barn Bonita Cal Wm A Blair 1946". Back of frame reads, "W.A. Blair 2435 Dale-- San Diego." Also painted a mountain landscape of Yellowstone lake (titled, "No.20 - Evening on Yellowstone Lake - W.A. Blair"). The Yellowstone lake scene had a strong emphasis on color. Signed works, "W.A. Blair".

BLANNIN, FREDERICK B. (1871-1941) --- Early Riverside (Inland Empire) California artist. Fred Blannin was born in Manchester, England on October 13th, 1871. He moved to Manitoba, Canada in 1886 and was known to have painted in Winnepeg for several years. In 1897, he arrived in Los Angeles. He was known to have settled in the Riverside area in 1900. Blannin worked for Joe W. Cornwell as a commercial artist and bought his art business in 1919. Exhibited: Riverside Fair (Award Winning Artist). Listed: History of San Bernadino and Riverside County by John Brown and James Boyd (1922, San Bernardino), Riverside Fair Exhibitor. Signed his work, "Fred Blannin".

BOND, VALERIE --- Known to have arrived in San Francisco in 1933 and was active as a painter. Also lived in Oakland, California. Painted in watercolor. Bond's work was bold and modern in color and style. A known work includes a close up landscape view of an early California home on a cliff. Signed works "Valerie Bond".

BONN, FRED --- Active in Manhattan Beach California in the mid to late 20th Century. Fred Bonn is known for his whimsical paintings in brightly colored orange and yellow backgrounds often of train scenes, country rural scenes, cars, and World War 2 planes incorporated into whimsical illustrative landscape scenes. A strong attention to illustration, drawing, and animation art can be seen in his original works. Orange was a common background color in his early paintings - Most of his early works have original labels that show he lived and was active in Manhattan Beach. Exhibited and had a studio in Laguna Beach - known to have held private art gatherings in Laguna Beach to sell his paintings.

BOUGHTON, EDNA --- Edna Boughton was active in Laguna Beach in the mid 20th Century. Painted small plein air desert impressionist oil paintings. Her full name was Edna Lovejoy Boughton. Several of her works are known to have a Laguna Beach label on the back of the painting. Exhibited with the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1955.

BOYGLE, VICTOR --- Painted brightly colored California coastal oil painting in the early part of the 20th Century. Signed work "Victor Boygle". Active as a painter from Los Angeles, California around 1935-1945. Victor Udolph Boygle passed away 5-10-1959 at the age of 73. A talented impressionist and colorist. BRAGG, CHARLES --- Mid-Century California modernist, surreal painter, illustrator, sculptor and etcher. Highly acclaimed for his humorous portraits and social satire subject matter in oil and etchings. Bragg was interested in portraying human behavior often including his sense of humor and satire into his paintings. Bragg was interested in people and often enjoyed making political and social comments within his work. BRAINERD, DOROTHY --- Active in Oregon and California. Painted impressionist desert paintings and landscape. Active from her studio around 1970 in Ashland, Oregon and also in Medford as well. BRANK, ROCKWELL --- Painted an impressionist California coastal of waves crashing. Signed work "Rockwell Brank". Described as Rockwell Smith Brank Jr. (b1917). Painted in oil.

BRANT, ELLIS --- Signed works "Brant". Painted a landscape scene of a rural mountain town (likely early Wisconsin scene). Born in Rundvik, Sweden June 15, 1893. Worked in wood carving and photography. Member of the Milwaukee Sketch Club. Studied under Robert Von Neumann. Painted with H.J. Stoltenberg, Francesco Spicuzza, and Morley Fraser. Additional listing in Wisconsin Magazine of History, V. 29, 1945-46, page 120. Moved to La Puente, California in the mid to late 1940's and painted mostly in Southern California and Northern Mexico. Died January 23, 1968.

BREDEHORST, GEORGE --- Settled in Southern California in 1931. Active in the mid 1950s with the Businessmen's Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. Painted coastal and impressionist seascapes with bright colors and a bold colorful brush. Signed works, "Bredehorst". BRITTINI --- Active in Los Angeles, California in the 1960s and early 1970s. Painted scenes of Spanish ships, modernist still life, boat scenes and colorful abstractions. The Brittini studio was owned by Britt Lomond, his father in law and also Loraine Miller. Worked in a semi abstract style and could be described as influenced by Bernard Buffett's line and geometric style. Many works were sold to the decorative market. CARDIN, THELMA --- Member of the California Art Club in 1964. Painted an impressionist plein air landscape.

CARTLEDGE, JEANNE --- Active from San Diego, California. Painted impressionist landscapes in oil. Active as an art instructor in the 1990s. Signed works, "Jean Cartledge".

CARTON, VESTA --- Mid-Century modernist. One of her works was accepted into a Long Beach Art Association Juried Show (1966). Signed works "Carton". In the mid to late 60s she was based in Long Beach. Painting known to exist has an exhibition label that reads, "Friends of The Long Beach Museum of Art - Art Rental Gallery". Expressionist - oil monoprint artist.

CATRON, KEN --- Painted impressionist California scenes. Active in San Diego.

CAVALLERO, JOHN --- A recent impressionist piece located is of the old Carmel mission. Titled on the back of the painting, "The Old Carmel Mission by John Cavallero". Only thing else known about this artist is that he was active in the 1930s in the Monterey area.

CHALMERS, BURL --- Born March 25, 1910 in Huntington, Indiana. In the 1930s, Burl Chalmers worked for the Huntington Theater and was featured in the Huntington Herald in the early 1950s. Moved to San Diego after 1959 and worked with Foster and Kleiser (billboard advertising company). While with Foster and Kleiser he received acclaim for his artwork with the San Diego Zoo. Painted seascapes, desert, Navajo subject, trains, and highly detailed Western paintings. Died in San Diego on July 16,2003 at 93. CHASE, RICHARD GABRIEL (1919-2007) --- Muralist and painter. Born in Massachusetts and moved to California after World War 2. Chase was an illustrator and professional artist in the San Diego area. His works have been featured in the publications of the San Diego Historical Society. He was active in art for almost all of his life. Known in San Diego for his large canvas paintings and mural pieces in his later years (painted mural at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego 1992). Known to have painted landscape, birds, still life, coastal views, and Catalina view paintings. Painted in oil and watercolor.

CHEYNO, Y. ELBERT --- Cheyno was a painter and sculptor of Indian and cowboy subject matter. He also painted Western landscapes and California scenes. Cheyno worked in the aircraft industry with Lockheed and American Airlines. In the 1970s, he became active as a professional painter and founded the AICA (American Indian and Cowboy Artists (1974)).

COGSWELL, BENJAMIN (1877-1950) --- Benjamin Cogswell Jr. painted in a colorist tonalist style. Originally from New York and eventually settled in Hermosa Beach, California. According to art historian Edan Hughes, Cogswell was originally from Amityville, Long Island and moved to California in the early part of the 20th Century and became active in Hermosa Beach. Cogswell painted California impressionist landscapes in oil and watercolor - he was interested in color; many of his paintings have an almost fauvist tonalist style. His watercolors were more traditional early California plein air style. Works include: tonal landscape, California tonalist sunset scenes, coastal scenes, seascape watercolors. Signed many of his works, "B.F. Cogswell".

COLBUS, M. --- Known works include a watercolor of San Francisco. May be related to the artists with this surname in Santa Cruz, Jean and Fred Colbus.

COSTELLO, GENEVA MAE --- Active in the early 20th Century from Redlands, California. Painted a tonalist and moody impressionist landscape in 1918. Dated verso - only known work, back of stretcher states "14 years old"..so hard to say whether the artist was actually this age when painted.

COTE, LUCY --- Painted plein air California landscapes scenes similar to that of Sam Hyde Harris. May have studied under Sam Hyde Harris -based on comments made from works known to exist.

COULTRUP, JOHN --- Painted 100s of impressionist landscape paintings in the early part of the 20th Century. An interesting fact about Coultrup according to a family member is that he was very tall..."I remember when I was about 7 (1967) our family got together for an event. I remember him coming in the front door, and when he would enter rooms he had to duck. I was told he was about 7 feet tall." Another interesting fact about Coultrup is that he was known to have been a chiropractor. Active in the 1930s in Long Beach, California. Signed many of his works, "Coultup" or "J.A. Coultrup". Could be described as a speed technique or colorist painter. He was born in Kansas in 1888 and passed away in California in 1982.

CRANMER, JEAN --- Mid to late Century California watercolorist, Jean Cranmer. Active in Redlands, California as a watercolorist - painted landscape scenes in watercolor. CROSMER, MARTHA --- According to several auction houses, Martha Crosmer was born in 1900. Considered an American based artist and appears to have been active in Southern California in the mid part of the 20th Century. Her work includes still life, floral oil painting, and scenes of the California landscape. Some of her work used a bright loose palette knife approach with attention to color and emotion. A talented painter.

CROTHERS, JUANITA -- Born June 24,1922 and died September 17, 1993 in Lancaster, California. Juanita was known to have operated a gallery from what was known as the old Fire Station 33 which was originally built in 1939 based in the Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley. Many of her works were painted in the Landcaster area in the 1950s. She often signed her works, "J. Crothers" - her work was a blend of impressionism, realism and modernism.

CROWE, WILLIAM F. --- Active from 137 12th St. E., Palmdale. Painted desert landscapes of the area in Palmdale. Active in Los Angeles and later lived in Palmdale. Signed works, "William F. Crowe". Passed away in 1965. Exhibited with the Eagle Rock Artists (1929-32).

CRUTCHER, PAUL W. --- early California impressionist, Paul Crutcher. Active in the San Diego area in the mid 20th Century. Many of his works are snow scenes and winter landscapes. He also painted coastal views and desert scenes. Signed works, "Paul W. Crutcher".

CUNNINGHAM, PATRICIA (1907-1984) -- Mid Century California modernist. Patricia Cunningham was born in California but studied early in her life with Hans Hofmann in Munich, Germany and Andre L'Hote in Paris. By the 1930s she settled in Carmel and became the first woman president of the Carmel Art Association. Her works often had attention to line, the use of a black line for the landscape image, abstraction and expressionist feel.

DAVIS, J.K. --- Lived in Pasadena, California. Active around 1920. Works could be described as similar to John Coultrup or John Englehart.

DAVIS, VERA --- Painted a landscape of the desert and palm trees - the work known appears to be of Palm Springs, California. Talented painter. Active in the mid to late 20th Century.

DEANE, TINA LYNN --- Mid 20th Century and Contemporary California colorist and post impressionist. Exhibited with the Pacific Art Collective in Northern California. Signed works, "Tina Lynn Deane". Great use of color and modernist influences with elements of impressionist style, modernism, and colorist techniques.

DECUYPERE, BERNADETTE --- Born in Canada and settled in Oakland, California. She painted colorful landscapes similar to that of John Anthony Conner and Herbert Sartelle. Appears to have been mostly active as an artist in the 1940s. Signed works "B. De-Cuypere". A talented early California impressionist.

DELANEY, NORA --- Painted an impressionist desert oil painting. Signed "Nora DeLaney". Active mid 20th Century.

DELONG, SHARON --- Active from Cerritos, California in the mid 1970s. Known to have had a gallery in Artesia, Orange and Cerritos, California during the mid 20th Century. Her painting style was with brush and palette knife in the impressionist and traditional realism styles. Exhibited at the Laguna Art Festival. Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1975).

DERAAD, MAARTEN --- Active from South Pasadena, California. Painted from 1505 Marengo Ave., South Pasadena, CA. Painted tonalist plein air landscapes of the area. One of his recent works located is titled, "The Foothills". Signed works, "Maarten de Raad". A talented plein air impressionist, active in the mid 20th Century.

DESHAZO, William "Bill" --- Painted brightly colored coastal paintings in Laguna Beach. Mid 20th Century artist, 1960s. Sold works with Larry Kronquist gallery in Laguna Beach, California.

DHUE, RODERICK --- Plein air impressionist painter. Painted a small coastal scene - appeared to be Carmel area coastal landscape. Strong attention to lighting and loose plein air brushwork. Several of his known works appear to be on the smaller side. A talented artist. Active in the early part of the 20th Century.

DONOHUE, MAURICE A. --- Painted a series of desert paintings in the high desert area in California. Titled verso "Painted by Maurice A. Donohue of Lucerne Valley, California (on the High Desert, between Apple Valley and Palm Springs -- Part of the Mojave Desert. 1961). Style is slightly abstract and could be considered minimal. Signed work "M.A. Donohue".

DORNBACH, VERNON --- Redlands, California artist. Arrived to the University of Redlands in 1957 and was head of the art department there for many years. Dornbach was also one of the founding members of the Redlands Art Association. Interested in the colorist style and how color and line work together. President of the Redlands Art Association for two years. Signed works, "Dornbach". Listed: Redlands Art Association.

DRECHSLER, C. --- Painted a small colorist California landscape. Active mid 20th Century.

DREIFUSS, LEOPOLD --- San Francisco painter. His works were labeled on the back "Paint-O-Graphs - Originating in the Studios of Leopold Dreifuss, San Francisco". Painted from his studio in the early part of the 20th Century.

EASTON, JESSIE -- Painted an impressionist Monterey "Cypress Point" coastal in the 1930s. Active in Laguna Beach. Signed works, "Jessie Easton". A talented early California artist.

EDMONDS, HATTIE M. --- Painted a plein air impressionist desert painting near Palm Springs. Known to have painted with Martella Cone Lane. Signed work; "Hattie M. Edmonds".

EDWARDS, BURTON P. --- B.P. Edwards was active in the mid 20th Century with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in California. His work includes modernist floral paintings with attention to color. Signed works "Eduardo". Had a studio art gallery "Eduardo Studio" in South Laguna on S. Coast Highway. Also known to have been active from Claremont, California. Exhibited his work in Palm Springs with the Desert Art Center (1970).

EDWARDS, L.H. --- Painted a California impressionist mission oil of Mission San Juan Capistrano. Early California art, active circa 1940. Signed work, "L.H. Edwards".

EHLERS, JUNIATA --- Also known as Junie Ehlers. Painted a rare impressionist watercolor of the San Fernando Valley. This piece is titled verso, "Eucalyptus Grove - San Fernando Valley, California". Ehlers was born in 1870 in Ohio and came to California in the early part of the 20th Century (1915). She was known to have lived in Santa Ana (Orange County), California. According to the provenance on the back it was painted circa 1940. Ehlers was also known to have painted a scene of Olivera St. in Los Angeles. Ehlers additional works known include a small colorful landscape scene in oil, a small Indian camp scene, and seascape. Ehlers painted in both oil and watercolor / gouache.

ELGIN -- Painted an impressionist Northern California forest interior scene with cabin. Signed work "Elgin '44". Painting located had a Flax's Frame Shop framer label verso.

ESTES, MARJORIE --- Active in San Diego, California. A recent painting located was a small California impressionist coastal. Artist label on the back of the painting. Mid 20th Century artist.

EVANS, GRACE --- Member of the San Diego Art Club. Active mid 20th Century. Painted impressionist landscape scenes with Eucalyptus trees.

EVANS, H.P. (M. Evans) --- Painted an impressionist coastal oil painting. Exhibition label on the back says that the artist was active in the San Diego coastal area - Cardiff by The Sea (painting is of Cardiff Beach North). Exhibited in Del Mar. Work appears to be signed "M. Evans" or "H.P. Evans".

FABIAN, HARRIET HOAG --- Active from San Francisco during the 1930s to 40s era. Signed works "Harriet Hoag Fabian". A known example includes a floral still life on a reflective table with sharp color and detail.

FAILLE, CARL ARTHUR --- Active for a brief period in the 1930s in San Diego, California. Most of his work was painting outside of California but several works do exist from this period. Faille was active with the California Art Club as well. Painted small impressionist landscape paintings often with buildings and views of the city with docked boats. Signed many of his works, "C.A. Faille".

FELTS, LUCE --- Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1970). Active in Palm Springs, California. Felts was also known to have been an art teacher in the area as well. Known to have painted smoke tree and desert landscapes of the area. Most of her work was from the Palm Springs period and scenes of the desert. She later moved to Seattle and has a home studio there.

FERGUSON, D. --- Painted a small California desert impressionist oil. Signed work, "A.D. Ferguson". Painted in 1956. Mid Century desert artist.

FETTER, NEWELL --- Contemporary mid-century artist. California modernist. Abstract expressionist period. Los Gatos, California Studio card verso. Listed in Bay Area Visual Artists and Architects Index. Signed his work "Newell". Believed to have been born in 1923, and to have lived in Texas at one time in addition to several locations in California, both Northern and Southern.

FIELDS, EVALYN --- Hemet, California artist. Painted a desert landscape scene in Hemet, California in 1966.

FINZI, ED --- Painted with the Desert Art Center, Palm Springs. One of his works is titled, "Desert View" and was exhibited with the Desert Art Center. Signed works, "E. Finzi". Active in the mid 20th Century.

FISHER, ORR CLEVELAND (1885-1974) --- Born in Iowa. Painted an impressionist oil of Lake Millerton, Fresno California. Won award for his portrait of J.N. Ding Darling (created National wildlife refuge in Sanibel Island) at the Society of Western Artists show (Fashion Fair - Fresno) which was donated to the University Museum - Iowa State University. Orr Fisher lived in Fresno in the latter part of his life (1960s). Also had a studio in Woodstock, New York and was active in the art colony there.

FLORIAN, MARK --- Listed: Los Angeles Times (1/16/92), ListedArtist.com Rediscovered California Artists. Mark Florian painted out of his studio in La Habra Height, California. Member of the National Watercolor Society. Works shown at the Whittier Art Gallery. He was the director of the National Watercolor Society National Exhibition (1989). The watercolor influence can be seen in a work titled, "Vegetable Still Life". Signed works, "M. Florian".

FLOYD, DORIS --- Painted the Fairbanks Adobe Los Penesquitos, California in 1962. Active in the later part of the 20th Century. Signed works "Doris Floyd".

FOOSE, A. --- Signed works "A. Foose". Full name of artist, Adrian Foose. Plein air desert and California landscape painter. Possibly most active in Los Angeles. Works could be described as similar to or influenced by Sam Hyde Harris.

FORD, SILVIA --- Painted the Salina's Southern California railroad station in watercolor (dated 1947). One of the paintings located was titled "Salina's SP Ste" on back side.

FOSTER, DON --- Mid-Century impressionist. Born in Canada. Art teacher and collectible California impressionist. Signs, "Don Foster". Don Foster was widely exhibited in California. He was a veteran member of the famed Palm Springs Desert Art Center with a significant web presence. Don Foster organized and taught annual outdoor classes in Grand Teton and Yosemite National Parks, the Canadian Rockies, and along the coasts of California, Oregon, and Hawaii. Often, the workshops offered optional instruction by oil painter Darwin Duncan or watercolorist Robert Landry.

FOSTER, DUDLEY E. ---Talented California plein air painter. Signed works "Dudley E. Foster". Appears to have been active in the later part of the 20th Century and works could be described as similar to Sam Hyde Harris.

FRENCH, CLARA --- Painted a small desert impressionist landscape. Signed her work "Clara French". California desert and landscape painter.

FRICK, M. --- In 1951 and 1952, Frick painted desert impressionist landscapes. Signed works "M. Frick". Appears to be mostly a palette knife painter and active in the 1950s in California. Works could be described as minimal mixed with a touch of John Hilton.

FRIDAY, EVE --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in 1965. Painted modernist floral, still life, vegetable subject matter often with black textural backgrounds. Lived in Las Vegas, Nevada circa 1965. Signed works "Eve Friday".

FROMBERG, GERALD --- In 1931 he painted an impressionist painting of Yellowstone National Park. Listed as a Brooklyn, NY artist but painted in California in the early part of the 20th Century.

GARCIA, DANNY --- Mid Century California modernist. Active in Carmel. Painted minimalist colorful landscapes in his unique semi abstract style. Well known in the Monterey / Carmel local gallery scene, Danny Garcia has had a gallery on Ocean Ave. in Carmel for many years. Many of his works featured vividly colored Monterey tree landscapes with a coastal background.

GARDNER, MARY --- California landscape and desert painter. Appears to have been active in the mid 1940s in California. Painted impressionist landscape and painting of the desert. Signed work "Mary Gardner".

GASBERG, R. - Painted an impressionist California landscape. Signed work, "R. Gasberg". Ruby Gasberg was born in Utah and settled in California in the early part of the 20th Century. Work known appears to be from about 1920.

GASZYNSKI, MICHAEL --- Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1911. He arrived in California in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Michael Gaszynski was known for selling cheesecake to the Hollywood elite. In the early 50s he began his work in watercolor. During this time he was the director the Huntington Hartford Foundation in Pacific Palisades. A man of many trades he was also a manager of a nightclub on the Sunset Strip. In the 1970s and 80s he helped to bring Polish art and promote Polish art at Top Of The Market Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1986, he settled in Encinitas, California (near San Diego) and continued to paint.

GATELY, VELDA BUYS --- Early California artist. Painted floral impressionist paintings. Had a studio in Hollywood, California on Hollywood Blvd. Signed work, Velda Buys Gately.

GERMAIN, FRANK --- Mid-Century modernist painter and watercolorist. Known primarily as a watercolorist. Frank Germain's work was featured in a book by Walter Foster Publications. "The Art of Watercolor: with Frank Germain..." and also "Seascapes by Frank Germain". A recent oil painting of his work was found of an old car / buggy with driver and passengers in a modernist street landscape. Signed his work, "Germain" or "Frank Germain". Additionally Listed in: Walter Foster Publications, The Art of Watercolor.

GIGNOUX, THELMA --- Painted desert impressionist watercolors in the late 1949s. Knows watercolors were dated 1941 and 1949 and artist signed work in full "Thelma Gignoux". Known to have been active in California.

GILBERT, DORIS --- Active in the mid 20th Century and specialized in painting California coastal and seascape scenes. Doris Gilbert's style was more on the realist side with attention to ocean details and mood of the coast such as attention to fog or light reflection off the ocean waves. GILBERT, GLENNA --- Painted in Pacific Palisades. Active in the mid 20th Century. California impressionist with elements of modernism. Signed works "Glenna Gilbert".

GILBERT, SARAH D. (1869-1972) --- Painted a small impressionist painting of the Mojave desert landscape. Painted in watercolor. Signed work, "Sarah D. Gilbert". Known to have exhibiting work at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition (1886).

GILDERSLEEVE --- Active in Rancho Mirage, California in the mid 1950s. Used P.O. Box 81, Rancho Mirage, CA. Plein air desert painter. Its possible that this is a different artist than listed Santa Cruz painter, Beatrice Gildersleeve who passed away in 1933 (source: Edan Hughes - Artists in California).

GINOUX, THELMA (1904-1984) --- Known for her California desert watercolors from the 1940s and '50s.

GIPPLE, FLO -- Painted coastal, floral and still life paintings. Active from Downey, California. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in 1975. She continued to paint into the mid 1980s -a known work includes "Northern Calif. Coast" painted in 1985. Her paintings of the California coast capture light with attention to color and emphasis on the sunset. Studied with Don Foster and workshops with Darwin Duncan and Vincent Farrell. Signed works "Flo Gipple".

GLASCOCK, GERRY --- Chairman of the Salon of Art at the Ebell Club for 6 years. Lived in Beverly Hills, and a member of the California Art Club. Known works include a 12x16 oil titled "Eucalyptus Tree" painted circa 1970.

GLYNDON, F. --- Painted a landscape of "The Old Mill" when living in Alameda, California in the early part of the 20th Century. Glyndon painted landscape scenes and also genre paintings (Jester in a Tavern). Most works are signed "F. Glyndon". He was active from 1810 Sherman St. in Alameda California in the early part of the 20th Century. The oil located is titled, "The Old Mill, Alameda, Calif." on the back of the canvas.

GOULD, DOROTHY --- Impressionist painter. Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the mid 20th Century. Lived in Palm Desert. Exhibited with the National Artists and Art Patrons Society Los Angeles and the Shadow Mt. Palette Club. Her work includes coastal paintings, lighthouse, and landscapes.

GRAHAM, WALLACE --- Known to have worked in the Art Department for Woody Allen's film "All You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex..". Wallace was a designer for Gillian's Island and was known to have worked on the art backgrounds and set design. He was also active with MGM Studios and worked on Michael Landon's "Highway to Heaven" in the Art Department as the construction foreman. He painted fine art in his leisure. One of his paintings known is a landscape of a snowy winter landscape which appears to be a Western scene. Signed his works, "W. Graham".

GRAM, ANN BENEDICT --- Mid 20th Century artist. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Painted impressionist plein air desert paintings and still life. Known to have lived off Tahquitz in Palm Springs, California. Member of the San Fernando and Glendale Art Association.

GREENBAUM, LEO --- Painted a poppies and lupine landscape in 1925. Signed Leo Greenbaum 1925. Known in the San Francisco Bay area for his murals and painting. Known to have painted Art Deco theaters of the 1920’s. Fine impressionist painter.

GRIERSON, EVELYNE BOYNTON --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in 1965. Lived in Hawthorne, California and was a member of the Desert Art Center as well as the Nevada Art Assoction. Evelyne was also a member of the American Institute of Fine Arts. Her work includes desert landscape, ghost town landscape, Western subject matter.

GRIFFING III, FREDERICK GEORGE --- modernist California painter born in 1951. Many of his paintings were figural and woman as subject matter. Also painted activity genre scenes. Colorist and modern thick brush style. Signed works, "Griffing".

GRINGLES --- Painted a desert landscape titled “Desert Palms” and signed work “Gringles.” Also noted on the stretcher bar reads “Gringles Studios, 3222 Bellvue Avenue, Los Angeles 22, Calif. Dunkirk 2-7576.”

GRISE, HENDRIK --- Mid Century California modernist painter. Born 1914-1982. Painted expressionist works of nudes and abstract. Known to have exhibited black and white drawings at Chaffey College in 1964. Known to have exhibited in the early 80s at the Chaffey Community Art Association’s Museum of History and Art. Signed his work "Grise". Seems to have been most active circa 1960s and 70s. Died in 1982.

GROVE, KEN --- Painted landscape and coastal scenes in the Santa Cruz area. Known to have been a lumberman and free spirit who painted in his spare time. Some of his works were signed with initials. Also painted in watercolor.

GUSTAFSON, M. (Gustafson, Marie) --- Painted impressionist desert landscape scenes. Works were brightly colored and appear to be mostly of the Palm Springs and surrounding desert area. Active in the mid 20th Century. Signed works, "M. Gustafson". Painted small desert scene oils of the Morongo / Yucca Valley area near Palm Springs.

GUSTAFSON, VERNE EDWARD --- Painter who resided in Apple Valley, California. Tended to attach business labels verso, and sometimes did not sign works. Known paintings included desert subjects.

GWINN, DONNA --- Painted a desert landscape later part of the 20th Century. Active from Romona, California. Signed work "D. Gwinn".

HAGER, BILL --- Born in Illinois. Painter and teacher. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1965, 1970-1975). Hager was also a member of the Pallette Club of Palm Desert. Married to Bell Hager. Painted plein air impressionist desert paintings of the Palm Springs area.

HAGER, CLARENCE --- Painted an impressionist desert scene in 1941.

HAIGH, C.M. --- Painted brightly colored pastels and small minimalist desert oil paintings. A recent painting found was a small oil painting of a desert scene done in minimalist impressionist style. Signed work "C.M. Haigh".

HALL, DONALD HAVEN --- Painted a series of urban street scene paintings. Late 20th Century period. Signed work, "Donald Haven Hall". California mid century modernist.

HALL, JERVIS LEIGHTON --- Mid century watercolorist. Works shown at the Arcadia Public Library (1962,1963). One of the artist's watercolor examples is titled, "Lamanda Landscape". Signed works "Jervis Leighton Hall".

HALSTEAD, ROBERT --- Active from Diamond Bar, California in the mid 20th Century. Known to have painted small botanical floral still life paintings. Signed works, "Halstead".

HAMLIN, LLOYD --- Lived in San Diego according to address label on back of painting (late 20th Century). Painted an impressionist coastal oil painting of La Jolla (La Jolla Cove) with colorful loose brushwork. Label verso reads, "Lloyd Hamlin, 4654 Fargo, San Diego Cal. 92117".

HAMMERBERG, ED H. --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the mid part of the 20th Century. Exhibited work with the Desert Art Center (1975). Known to have retired in Pasadena. Hammerberg worked with the Pasadena Art Association and with Duncan Gleason. His work was mostly desert landscapes and the Southern California desert near Palm Springs. HAND, GEORGE A. --- Painted a plein air watercolor sketch of Joshua Tree, Antelope Valley - California in 1931.

HANSON, CARL M. --- Born in 1881. Painted brightly colored coastal in 1941 and California landscape paintings. Signed work "Carl Hanson". Died in 1950 (Salinas, California - death record)

HANSON, F. FOSGATE --- Painted desert landcapes in oil, circa 1950s.

HARCUS, THOMAS G. --- Painted acrylic realist scenes of boats and flying planes in the mid 20th Century. Harcus also painted superbly detailed train paintings in the late 40s. Studied at Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. His work has been shown in "The Old Car Magazine". One of his early works located was dated 1948 and many of his oils are dated well into the 1970s. Most of his works are signed in full "Thomas G. Harcus". Appears to have lived in Encino, California for a period of time. Additionally listed in Artnet.

HARGISS, BILL --- H.W. Bill Hargiss. Legendary Coach called "Bald Eagle". Painted a plein air painting of Palm Springs, California. The back states that the painting was done in early Spring of 1970 - San Dunes and Desert Verbenia (Near Bermuda Dunes Golf Course) - Palm Springs, California. Signed his work "H.W. Bill Hargiss". Painted in his leisure.

HARSTON, DELL --- New information on the artist suggests that the artist may have lived in Yucaipa, California at one time. A recent painting located was signed "Dell Horner" and marked Yucaipa, California on the stretcher. Myrtle Dell Horner Harston was born Myrtle Dell Haines in Kansas on August 11, 1884. Early in life she appears to have lived in Texas and later California. In Texas she lived in a boarding house and had the name Myrtle Dell Horner. Before 1930, she appears to have signed works "Dell Horner". In 1930 she married William Garfield Harston which leads to later works signed with her married name "Dell Harston". Dell Harston passed away on July 9, 1956. Harston was also known to have painted floral still life in watercolor (several paintings are exhibited with the Womens Club in Yucaipa, California).

HARWOOD, HARVEY --- Painted a colorful impressionist desert painting. Mid 20th Century. Signed work, "Harvey Harwood".

HEARD, MARGUERITE --- Talented California impressionist. Active from Redlands, California. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the mid 1970s. Studied with Leon Franks and Eugenia Stiffler. Heard operated her own studio gallery in Redlands. Known to have also painted portraits.

HENDRIX, C. --- According to label verso this artist was a resident of Nevada. Painted desert and California landscape scenes. The label verso also mentions that the artist "has received many prizes..some of his paintings under a different name are hanging in many California art galleries". Works could be described as similar to that of Herbert Sartelle.

HERBST, IRVIN J. --- Painting known to exist is a Sierra landscape scene. Similar to the realist impressionist work of Edwin Forker and also a bit like Joseph John Englehart. Signed his work, "I. J. Herbst 1929". According to art historian Edan Hughes, Herbst was known to have been active in the Los Angeles area as a painter and interior decorator.

HEYDE, MABEL C. --- Signed works Mimi Joy. Artist name is Mabel C. Heyde. Painted small pastel floral paintings. Active in California around 1935 to 1940s. Also painted in oil. Mainly appears to have been interested in painting flowers in pastel.

HICKEY, ELLA --- California painter - early part of the 20th Century. Painted a plein air impressionist landscape - loose colorful impressionist brush work.

HILER, PAULINE --- Painted coastal impressionist oil paintings. Signed work "P. Hiler".

HILL, EDDY --- Painted in Carmel around 1940. One of works is a small impressionist landcscape of 17-Mile Drive - Cypress tree landscape. Middle name appears to be Mae. Painted an impressionist scene of Carmel dunes in 1940.

HILPERT, JOSEF --- According to the Toronto Sun, Hilpert painted "miniature masterpieces assured of near immoratality.." Known for his small works, portrait painting, floral and fruit subject matter, and landscapes of his travels. A nice example of Alaska is known to exist, titled "sketch of the Mendelhall Glasier 1952 - Alaska, Hubbard Expedition". A talented California and Canadian painter. Also known to have been the director of art at the deSaisset Art Gallery University - Santa Clara, California. Died in Canada in 1975.

HOCKENBERRY, R.J. --- Bob Hockenberry is a Palm Springs based artist. Painter of animals and Palm Springs desert scenes and landmarks. Signed his work "Hockenberry" and "R.J. Hockenberry". Known to have painted various Palm Springs landmarks (Windham and La Quinta Hotels). Bob Hockenberry was also known to have painted backgrounds for Disney Studios and later settled in the desert area to paint and create sculpture in fiberglass. He also had a studio gallery in Palm Springs.

HODGSON, MARGARET N. --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the early 1970s. Active from Whittier, California during this period. Her works include desert impressionist paintings similar to plein air painter, Sam Hyde Harris. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in California (1970).

HOLLAND, MILDRED (b1905) --- Active with the California Watercolor Society in the early 1930s. A recent watercolor located is of several palm trees in a desert landscape.

HOLMERS, CHARLOTTE D. --- Painted impressionist California scenes. Her works seem to have the lighter approach to impressionist painting similar to the San Diego school and Charles Fries. Active from Escondido, California (near San Diego). Signed her work, "Charlotte D. Holmers".

HOLSINGER, ROBERT --- Painted an impressionist work of Monterey Pines. Appears to have been a Monterey, California artist circa 1925. Signed work RGH.

HOLTZ, DONOVAN --- Scenic artist and set painter living in Northern California, probably in the Mendocino or Santa Rosa area. Also an actor and director. Associated with Mendocino Theatre Company. Also paints fine art, including a fine rocky seascape oil on board. This is an attribution based on our research. Further information is welcomed.

HOOD, PETER --- Painted a realist slightly primitive/colorist scene of Bruce's Cove in Cayucos, California in the mid 1980s. Signed works "Peter Hood".

HOORI, F. --- Painted a Carmel impressionist landscape. Japanese artist. Japanese signature verso - signed front of work, "F. Hoori". Mid 20th Century.

HOPE, WYMAN --- Painted an impressionist High Sierra mountain landscape painting. Talented plein air painter.

HORSCH, MARIE --- Painted small early California landscapes of the Santa Barbara area. Known to have painted small mission scenes and flowering poppy landscapes in watercolor. Painted around 1930. According to art historian Edan Hughes, Marie Hoesch was a San Francisco artist who studied with William Keith in the 1880s. One of her fellow students said of her, "We were all very fond of Marie; she was such a 'good fellow'; and we understood that there was a brief engagement between her and Mr. Keith's son Charlie, who used to come into the studio and hover around her easel...Miss Hoesch kept up her painting all her life," (Keith, Old Master of California by Brother Cornelius). A talented early California watercolorist.

HOUSER, BERNICE --- Active from Long Beach, California around 1967. Painted small colorful coastal paintings. Her work could be described as similar to that of Violet Parkhurst. Signed work "B. Houser".

HOWELL, FRANKIE --- Painted an impressionist coastal view titled Pacific Grove (Monterey, California). Signed work "F. Howell".

HOWES, NELLE --- Early California artist who lived in San Jose. Her address was 112 S. Second St. She did a painting of Mission Santa Barbara on fibrous wood similar to coconut.

HULS, MABEL C. --- Painted San Juan Capistrano Mission oil about circa 1945 (16x20).

HULT, G. --- Painted a brightly colorful impressionist desert oil painting with smoke trees. Titled, "Smoke Tree". Signed work "G. Hult". Painted in 1968.

HUNT, BURLEIGH B. (1928-) --- San Diego painter of fine art still lifes, and also a cartoonist. Known works include an oil on board still life dated 1977.

HURST, ELEANOR --- Painted small landscapes and desert paintings in the La Mesa (San Diego area). Impressionist painter with a modernist feel. Active from 4824 Schuyler, La Mesa California. Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center.

HUTCHINS, R. DON --- A resident of North Hollywood who appears to have been active as a painter mostly since the 1970s. His folksy nostalgic landscape oils have titles like "Rural Livin'" and tend to be painted on masonite. Also lived in Los Angeles. Paintings tend to be panoramic in shape, some measuring 20x6.

IRVIN, DOROTHY --- Northern California artist known for strange, almost disturbing mixed-media paintings of masks. Extant works include two such paintings, one titled "World Trouble", and another titled "Shock Treatment". Both featured bright colors, and to some observers might suggest the works of Pablo Picasso.

IRVINE, CLARA LOOMIS (1894-1985) --- According to art historian Edan Hughes, At the turn of the century she was known to have lived in Oakland in 1910 and later moved to Modesto around 1916. She was married to John W. Irvine. Clara Irvine painted landscape scenes of California and mission paintings.

IRWIN --- Active in the 1970s. California modernist - mid 20th Century artist. Active from studio address 2179 Grandeur Dr., San Pedro CA according to address labels found on the back of works. Many examples were in very bright colors - modernist harbor paintings with buildings in the distance. Studied in Los Angeles and signed works "Irwin".

IWASAKI, TORU --- Painted a California landscape scene. Known work includes a tonalist mountain and sunset scene. A talented painter. Active in the mid 20th Century - painted works on masonite.

JACOBSON, ALBERT --- Painted an impressionist coastal view - painted in gouache. Active in Northern California 1930s. Signed work "Albert Jacobson".

JARVIS, ROBERT --- Painted modernist harbor scene - biography on the back mentions that he was a pupil of Rex Brandt. Active Mid 20th Century. Signed works "Jarvis".

JENNINGS, O.W. --- O.W. Jennings Jr. Painted a plein air impressionist desert landscape of Palm Springs.

JENSEN, V.P. --- Painted a colorist impressionist oil painting. Active mid 20th Century. Signed work, "V.P. JENSEN"

JOHNSON, CLARICE L. --- Painted a desert impressionist oil painting. Active from Cerritos, California mid 20th Century. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1975).

JOHNSON, ERIC R. --- Painted impressionist colorist landscape paintings. Brightly colored - almost fauvist and modernist in style. Active in the mid 20th Century.

JOHNSON, GLADYS --- Full artist name is Gladys L. Johnson. Painting known to exist is titled, "Desert Serenity" - painted in 1964. Talented plein air painter of the desert - mid 1960s California desert painter. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center.

JOHNSON, ROBERT J. --- Painted a California impressionist oil painting. Plein air artist.

JOY, MIMI --- Signed works Mimi Joy. Artist name is Mabel C. Heyde. Painted small pastel floral paintings. Active in California around 1935 to 1940s. Also painted in oil. Mainly appears to have been interested in painting flowers in pastel.

KAEDING, ELDON L. --- Born in North Dakota (1922). Active from Glendale, California and studied at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Founded the LERA Art Club in 1961. Painted in many media including charcoal, pastel and watercolor. He later lived in Sunnyvale, California.

KALPAKOFF, MARION (1927-) --- Born in Los Angeles, and living in Loma Linda, California. Primarily known for her book illustrations, but also painted fine art, including floral still lifes in oil. Illustrated "The Courtship of Vladimir the Frog" by Eva Russell.

KARR, JOY --- Painted a brightly colored floral impressionist oil painting in 1942. Signed work "Joy Karr". Framer label is on the back of the canvas reads, "Duncan & Vail Co., San Francisco Los Angeles".

KAZOR, LEONARD --- Leonard Kazor was a mid-century modernist painter in the Pasadena, California area. He was born in 1917 and passed away in Pasadena in 2000. Known to have painted modernist abstracts, figural, nudes, and expressionist cityscape pieces. He seemed to prefer to date his works and often mentioned the actual day the expression was executed. Kazor also often stated the location or a small memo about the piece on the back of his works. Many of his works ended up at a Long Beach California flea market a few years after he passed away and were sold out of a huge truckload...there were hundreds of his works in this one sale alone. Signed many of his work "L. Kazor". 

KEITH, FRANK --- Painted an impressionist desert oil painting. Active in the later part of the 20th Century from Santee, California. Painted known desert landscape in 1971.

KEITH, KATHARINE --- Painted a eucalyptus California painting in the late 20th Century (1970s era). Her work could be described as realism with the influence of impressionism. Signed work, "Katharine Keith".

KELLER, G.A. --- Painted a desert plein air landscape circa 1930s. Signed work, "G.A. Keller".

KENDALL, FRANK --- Painted in the late 1930s. A painting by Frank Kendall in 1937 reads, "The Land That Heals The Heartaches" - on back of masonite. Work could be described as similar to Delane or Englehart.

KILLIAN, Edwin W. --- Created a mosaic abalone sculpture painting from his studio in Imperial Beach, California. Appears to have been active in the 1960s period. A talented artist. Known work is titled, "Two Fish".

KING, DOROTHEA --- Painted impressionist California landscapes. Active in the early to mid 20th Century.

KINGMEN, S.E. --- In 1944, painted a realist cliff view of Grand Canyon. Signed work, "G.E. Kingmen 1944". A talented artist.

KLEIN, J. PERCY --- Active in the 1920s. Exhibited in 1926 at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona. Lived in Los Angeles in the late 1920s. Associated with the Otis Art Institute - mentioned on back of painting that it be returned to the Otis Art Institute after fair closing.

KNECHT, CHARLES --- Painted in 1970s. Painted a canvas while in North Hollywood Park.."I gave it to a lady who was an art consultant in return for having sold 5 of my paintings to a bank which is no longer. I believe it was Progressive Savings". Signed work "Charles Knecht".

KRYSPIN, FELIX --- Painted a colorful still life with apples, oranges and candle. Dated 1941 and signed work, "F.M. Kryspin". According to art historian Edan Hughes he settled in Eureka, California in 1930 and was active with the Humboldt Art Club.

KUBACKI, RAYMOND --- Lived in Altadena, California in the mid 1950s and passed away in San Diego. Kubacki studied at Chouinard Art Institute and was a member of the California Watercolor Society. Listed: Los Angeles Art Association, California Watercolor Society (1954), ListedArtist.com Rediscovered California Artists. Mostly active in the 1950s, his work was modern often in bright colors. KUSCHE, KARL --- Kusche painted landscape and desert oil paintings in the late 20th Century. Many of his works appear to be from Arizona and California. Southwest artist. Signed many of his works "K. Kusche".

LAINE, FREDERICK W. --- watercolorist from San Diego according to artist card on the back of the painting. Works are modernist in style - active mid 20th Century. Signed works, "Laine".

LAKE, HARRIET --- California oil painter from Palm Desert, Calif. She was active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the 1960s and 70s. Also active with the Shadow Mountain Palette Club (Palm Springs). Listed: Palm Springs Desert Art Center Artists.

LAMBERTSON, E.R. --- Painted a desert landscape from Thunder Bird Ranch in Palm Springs (1957). Back of painting reads "March 1st 1957 / Peggy's and Randy's "Picture Window" Thunderbird Ranch, Palm Springs / Thanks for all, E.R.L."

LANDRE, E. B. --- Modernist painter who lived in Dalsland, California. Known work is a vividly colored oil painting of a clown (24x28), dated 1966.

LaPORTE, WILLIAM RALPH --- Impressionist oil painter. Lived in Palos Verdes Estates and was active as a teacher, author, and educator in the 1920s and 30s. Appears to have painted impressionist scenes in his leisure. Signed his work, "W. R. LaPorte". Known painting is titled, "Deserted Wharf by Wm Ralph LaPorte (Palos Verdes Estates)". Active circa 1935.

LARRABEE, FREDERICK --- Painted a watercolor of Torrey Pines (San Diego). Signed work "Frederick Larrabee". Early California artist.

LARSON, ESTELLE --- Painted an impressionist oil painting similar to that of Paul Grimm. Signed work, "Estelle Larson".

LATTIN, J. --- Painted a small California mission impressionist painting around 1945. Strong use of color and composition. Signed work "J. Lattin". Possibly active as a painter from San Francisco area.

LAUT, HOWARD W. --- Painted impressionist landscapes in California. Signed works, "H.W. Laut".

LEATHERS, PAUL --- Painted desert paintings in the mid 20th Century. Signed works in block letters, "Paul Leathers". "Born back east in 1910, he moved to Palm Springs California, left for WWI then returned to the Lower Desert and spent the rest of his life Painting Southern Calif. area Desert Landscapes. The Artist is known on the West Coast as a Quality Painter and achieved quite a bit of Notoriety while alive, Paul Passed away in 1961 and is Buried in the Palm Springs Cemetery."

LEE, PARKER --- Mid 20th Century modernist. Parker Lee Leibsohn was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; he later lived in Colorado Springs, Oklahoma City, and then in 1957 moved to California. In the late 1950s he became active in Los Angeles and began to work with Martin Lowitz who helped to make Lee's work popular with Hollywood celebrities. Known for impressionist abstract style, his work was sold and featured at the Martin Lowitz gallery in Beverly Hills, California. In 1968, Lee exhibited his work at the Palacio de Cortes in Cuernavaca (Mexico). Known for his unique semi-abstract style and mid 20th Century abstract cityscapes.

LEONOFF, ALEX --- Watercolorist. Active from his studio at 1936 W. Huntington Dr. South Pasadena and also Huntington Park. Leonoff taught watercolor and specialized in California style watercolors during the mid 20th Century. Signed works, "Alex Leonoff". A talented California watercolorist. A standout of his work includes "Dry Dock - Newport Beach".

LETTON, MARION (1894-1975) --- Signed works, "M. LETTON". Active in California in the late 40s and 1950s. Her work has a loose quick impressionist style but focused more on color. Many of her paintings had an artist label on the back that read "Genuine oil painting by Marion Letton, well known artist..." Her works include mountain landscape and Sierra scenes.

LEWIS, CHARLES H. --- Chas. H. Lewis. Active from Pacific Palisades. Painted impressionist landscape and coastal oil paintings. He appears to have been self-taught style and interested in the local coastal landscape.

LILLY, BEULAH --- Active in San Diego county from Vista, California. She and her husband, Elmer, were apparently well-known landowners in the Vista area of northern San Diego County. According to our research, she is still living in the Vista area at the age of 97. She was also possibly a resident of nearby Fallbrook at one time. Her work includes desert landscape painting done with a bright plein air impressionist style. One of her works is titled, "Vallecito Sunset". A talented artist and works appear to be on the rare side. Signed work, "Beulah".

LITCHENFIELD --- Coastal seascape painter - painted a realist depiction of the California coastline. Signed work "Lichtenfield". Work attributed to Lou Lichtenfield - matte artist for Mighty Joe Young and worked with Warner Bros. effects. Created effects for The Fountainhead 1949, An American in Paris 1951, Helen of Troy 1956, King Kong 1976, Flash Gordon 1980.

LOCKETT, PANSY --- Painted desert and landscapes in oil with a blend of realism and impressionist style. Won an award for painting in the mid 1960s for landscape painting (Redlands Daily Facts, 1966). Signed works, "Pansy Lockett" and "P. Lockett". An additional work located by this artist was of a California desert painting and it appears that the artist may have lived or was active in the Redlands, California area at one time.

LORRAINE, J. --- Works could be described as similar to Herbert Sartelle. Painted small California impressionist landscapes - very colorful plein air look. Signed works "J. Lorraine".

LOUGH, JOHN HOWARD (1902-1994) --- Active in San Diego, California. His artist label on the back of some works reads "Paintings from the studio of John Howard Lough". Painted landscape and impressionist desert scenes.

LOVE, HARRY R. --- Painted an impressionist landscape - trees and cabin. Signed Harry R. Love '30.

LUCAS, H. --- Painted a plein air impressionist scene similar to that the early California plein air painters and in the early California impressionist style. Appears to be signed "H. Lucas" or possibly "F.H. Lucas".

LUCKIE, MADOLYN --- M. Luckie painted impressionist Palm Springs area desert landscape in the mid 1960s. Signed works, "M. Luckie". Known work is titled, "Desert Evening by Madolyn Luckie 1966".

LUPETTI, ROBERTO --- Important mid-Century Carmel California realist. Born in Milan, Italy. Studied at the Royal Academy in Rome, Italy. After the end of second world war, he moved to San Francisco and taught art and eventually settled in Carmel in the mid 1970s. He painted several Rabbi portraits, female nudes, portraits of pretty young women, classical architecture, and still life. He also had a studio on Ocean Ave. in Carmel, California (Roberto Lupetti Fine Art Studio). Signed his work "Roberto Lupetti". Could be considered one of the foremost 20th Century realist painters in California.

LYKKE, ALMA --- Painted in California. Known works include brightly colored floral still life. Signed work "Alma Lykke". Active circa 1945.

MAGNUSSON, MARGARET --- Painted coastal scenes and desert landscape. Active in the 1970s.

MALOUF, VICCI --- Active in Palm Springs, California (late 1960s and early 70s). Exhibited: Edward-Dean Museum (1969). Listed: Palm Springs Life (Nov.1969,Dec. 1970). Signs with full name.

MALLON, TOM -- Painted a realist aerial view Carmel coastal painting. Talented artist - active in the Carmel area?. Professional artist stamp verso. "All Rights Reserved #394 Coastal Serentity"

MATTSON, GEORGE --- Watercolorist. Painted a scene of working men taking shelter from the sun after a hard days work (dated 1938 - Figures taking break in railroad yard). Signed work George Mattson.

MAXWELL, WILLIAM --- Painted a landscape in oil in 1925 when he was a resident of Riverside, California. This single known work was signed "Wm Maxwell, Riverside, Cal. 1925".

McCALL, M. --- Painted a scenic Eucalyptus California landscape - similar to the work of Herbert Sartelle. Signed work "M. McCall". Active in the 1950s - possibly active from the San Diego area.

McCLAIN, A. --- Painted a coastal California seascape. Location of work appears to be Laguna Beach. Mid 20th Century artist.

McCLUNG, HELEN TY-RELL --- Active from Carmicheal, California. Mid 20th Century colorist painter. Painted a landscape of Eucalyptus trees and signed works "Ty-Rell".

McCULLEY, BEATRIZ MAURINE --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Lived in Palm Desert. Known for her portraits and floral still life painting. Her work was in mostly a traditional style but with elements of modernism and attention to color. Signed work in full "Beatrix Maurine McCulley". Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the late 60s to early 1970s. She was also a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association, California Art Club, National Miniature Society, and Painters of the Southwest. An interesting fact about the artist is that her father, Johnson McCulley, was a noted novelist and author of "Mark of Zoro".

McDONALD, K.A. --- Active from 1406 Hepner, Los Angeles California. Signed works "K. McDonald". Active in the early 1970s.

McDONALD, O --- Miniature - small works oil painter. Olline McDonald was a Palm Springs Desert Art Center artist known to have been active from Calimesa, California and also had a studio in Bard, California (Imperial County). Several works are stamped verso, "McDonald Studios, Bard - Calif.". Signed paintings "O. McDonald". Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center Artists (1965, 1975).

McDOUGALL, VAL --- Painted small plein air impressionist scenes in California. Works known include winter scenes. Active from 4421 Rosemont, La Crescenta, California.

McLAUGHLIN, JAMES MOORE (1909-1982) --- Painted a small pastel of La Jolla, California. Signed work "McL". Painted around the 1940s period and is listed in Who Was Who In American Art.

MEAD, MARGARET --- Painted California desert oil paintings in the mid part of the 20th Century. Work known was painted in April of 1958, a California desert scene. Signed work, "Margaret Mead". A talented impressionist painter.

MEDLAR, HARRY H. --- Painted an impressionist California mission painting. Not much is known about this artist - the work is stamped verso which indicates that the artist was from Monterey Park. Harry Harry Medlar was also known to have attended Mark Kepple High School in Monterey Park (1937-1941). Painted a work similar to a small mission painting by Benjamin C. Brown.

MELLINGER --- California folk artist - painted a series of hand painted dog portraits. Also painted in watercolor. Appears to have lived in the Inland Empire / Redlands, California area. Mid 20th Century artist.

MERBS, JAMES G. --- Painted an impressionist scene of Mexico. This work could be described as minimalist and with a colorist impressionist style. He also painted plein air style coastal and seascape pieces. Active from Monterey Peninsula / Carmel area. Works include still life, coastal, landscape, Mexico scenes.

MERRILL, ADA B. --- In the late 1940s Ada Merrill painted a coastal and flowering dunes impressionist landscape miniature. Found work was signed "Ada B. Merrill 1948". Appears to have been interested in painting mostly small works.

METZGER, LARUE --- Painted an impressionist and abstract colorful landscape. Painting located was semi abstract style in style with trees. Artist card on the back of the work. Appears to have been active in the mid 20th Century and likely lived in the Hawthorne, California area.

MEYER, P --- Painted a desert impressionist landscape. Signed work "P Meyer". Excellent use of color and depth , plein air feel.

MEYER, R.C. --- Painted an early oil painting of Carmel Bay. Signed work "R.C. Meyer" and titled on the painting Carmel Bay. Early 20th Century.

MEYERS, HELEN K. --- Laguna Beach, California artist. Listed in the Artists' Guild of Laguna Beach, Palm Springs Desert Art Center Artists (1970). Signs work "Helen Meyers". Her small landscapes often had a primitive rural California feel - barn scenes and landscape.

MICHLIN, BARRY --- Hollywood based Photographer. Exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1991 to present) and was given the Emerging Artist Award - One of 10 Emerging Artists "Retrospective and Prospective Exhibit - Celebrating 25th Anniversary of LACMA". Late 20th Century to present fine art photographer - whose emotional work captures the spirit of the moment and elements of spontaneity. A standout photograph was taken during the L.A. riots in 1992, a moment of intensity which is titled, "UFO Attacks Hollywood". Collectors and client list include notables such Julia Child, Aaron Spelling Productions, and Wolfgang Puck. A talented photographer and one to watch.

MILLER, DELPHA S. --- Painter. Delpha S. Miller taught art at La Sierra University in Riverside, California in the late 1930s and 40s. According to former student Elmer Fischer from Redlands, California, "He credits Delpha S. Miller, a former art teacher at La Sierra University, for his inspiration. In 1940 Fischer was too poor to enroll in the school, but she helped him anyway." Delpha Miller was also an illustrator, she illustrated the book "My Word Book by Katherine B. Hale, Pacific Press Publications Jan.1931 - Illustrated by Delpha S. Miller".

MILLER, LOU --- Painted in California in the mid part of the 20th Century. Signed works, "Lou Miller". Some of his work includes scenes of the desert and landscapes in California. A talented impressionist.

MINAMI, ROBERT (1919-2005) --- Lived in Oceanside, California. Painted modernist floral watercolors. Exhibited at Timmons Galleries in Rancho Santa Fe in North San Diego County. Also created non-objective works. Signed with just his last name plus a Japanese cypher.

MITTON, VIRGINIA --- Active in San Diego, California in the mid 20th Century. Painted colorist impressionist landscape with a touch of modernism and impasto brush work. One of her works known is titled "Tahquitz Peak - Mt. San Jacinto, Calif."

MODIE, EDNA ZYL --- California painter who appears to have been active mostly in the 1940s. She lived in Pomona during those years. She seems to have preferred still life subjects in oil. A known work is titled "Brass Kettle With Daisies" and was an oil on board measuring 26x20.

MOHLER, HARVEY --- Mid 20th Century artist. Active from Montclair, California. Painted a small railroad mountain landscape scene. It was unusually mounted with elevation to the frame surface giving the piece an experimental modern dimensional style.

MOORADIAN, KOSROF T. --- K.T. Mooradian. Active in California in the early to mid 20th Century. His realist impressionist desert paintings are superb in detail and plein air light. One of his finest examples is a view of the California desert area. Signed works, "K.T. Mooradian". Studied at the Otis Art Institute.

MOORE, ALDEN L. --- Painted an impressionist snowy landscape scene. Bold brush work and attention to color. According to label on the back the artist was active in California in the early part of the 20th Century.

MOORE, DEWEY --- Hand colored photography. Desert photographer in California in the early part of the 20th Century.

MOORE, RICHARD B. --- Active from Redondo Beach, Calif. 2204 Green Lane. Painted an impressionist boat harbor scene. Mid 20th Century artist. Signed work "Richard Moore '63".

MORGAN --- Early Long Beach, California artist. Works could be described as similar to John Coultrup. Morgan had a studio at 145 Pike Street in Long Beach, Calif.

MORIARTY, ELSIE M. (1907-2005) --- One of her known works is an old barn and house in a California landscape. Her work appears to have elements of modernism and a colorist impressionist feel. Signed works, "Moriarty". According to art historian Edan Hughes, while in California she taught in La Mesa (Grossmont Union High), California.

MORRISON, RODERICK D. --- Painted a colorful impressionist plein air desert painting. A talented early 20th Century painter. Signed works "Roderick D. Morrison".

MORRISSEY, ROY --- Born 1924. Painted a scene of the Temecula Jail in Old Town Temecula, California. Morrissey was known to have studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and was teacher at Palomar College in San Marcos. According to art historian Edan Hughes he was active from Temecula and currently lives in Hemet, California. Student of Ralph Love.

MORTON, WILLIAM --- Painted colorful landscape scenes in California. Signed works, "Wm Morton". Active in the early part of the 20th Century.

MOSIER, BEVERLY --- Laguna Beach, mid Century California artist. Active in the mid 20th Century circa 1970s in Laguna Beach, California. Craftswoman and painter. Her coastal works had modern influences with elements of realism and impressionism. Signed works, "Bev Mosier" or "Bev. Mosier 1970".

MULL, NORMAN --- Western impressionist cowboy artist - mid-20th Century. One of his found works is signed "Norm W. Mull" from "Independence, Calif." (in the heart of Owen Valley, CA). Norman Mull was active in the Owen Valley area and worked at Rancho Samataguma. He is a real cowboy and participated in the Monache Rodeo. Modernist Western impressionist style with thick brushwork and bright colors. The subject of the work known is of a cowboy leading a "Pack Train". Circa 1960s to 1970s era.

MUNROE, JOHN B. (b1900) --- Born in Nebraska in 1900 and settled in Chicago in the early 1920s. He worked as a printer and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Chicago Art Institute. Studied with Frederic Mizen and Harold Von Schmidt. After 1957, he became active in California and worked in the art department for Douglas Aircraft. He painted in his leisure and appears to have mostly painted in watercolor. Signed most of his work "John B. Munroe".

MURANE, RUTH --- Painted mid Century coastals in California. Active from Santa Cruz, CA. One of her works was titled "Moon Magic - Monterey Coast". Signed work "Ruth Murane". Born 1901 and passed away in 1991.

MURPHY, SANDY --- Painter of impressionist California desert landscapes in the 1950s to 60s era. Signed work "Sandy Murphy".

MURRAY, MADLYNE --- Desert painter. Listed member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center, ListedArtist.com Art Reference - Rediscovered California Artists. Madlyne Murray was known to have studied with Albert J. Jarvis, Margaret Baker, William Lester, and Marjorie Cummings. Active in the mid 20th Century. Lived in 29 Palms and specialized in painting scenes of the desert. Signed works, "Madlyne Murray".

MYHR, F. --- Painted an early California coastal scene circa 1940. Signed work, "F. MYHR" in caps.

NAYLOR, EVELYN --- Painted desert and landscape paintings. Active and lived in Palm Springs with her husband and artist, Tom Naylor. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1964/65) and the Shadow Mountain Club (Palm Desert). Known to have studied desert painting with Fred Chisnall and Wilton McCoy. Signed works, "Evelyn Naylor". A talented overlooked desert artist.

NEAR, E.M. --- Etta M. Near. Painted a moody desert oil painting - large evening desert scene.

NEPTUNE, J. --- Early California impressionist. Painted small impressionist California landscapes. One known painting is a copy of an Anna Hills painting. The subject matter of the painting is a Eucalyptus grove landscape - titled on the back "Copy of Anna Hills - J. Neptune". Neptune also painted original works, small sunset landscape scenes of California. Signed works, "J. Neptune".

NEVEL, BERNYCE --- Early California impressionist. Active from Burbank, California. 1401 Olive Ave. Works include colorful paintings with towering trees and light breaking through treetops and into the forest interior. Talented painter.

NG, K.F. --- K F Ng (Kee Fung Ng) painted in San Francisco, Calif. and had a gallery space at one time in the city. Some of his stretcher bars are stamped "Kee Fung Ng Gallery, 765 Clay St. near Grant, San Francisco, Calif. 94108, Store - 434-0160, (along with his phone numbers)". He specialized in paintings of the Bay area and worked in a modernist impressionist semi-abstract style. Works known: Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco scenes, California seascapes. Mid-Century California modernist Chinese painter.

NICHOLSON, CHARLES W. --- Desert painter. Additional information about this artist is that he once lived at "204 No. Bonnie Brae St. Los Angeles - Scenic California Paintings". Located on back of one of his works. Signed many of his works C.W. Nicholson.

NORDMANN, JOSEPH --- Member of the Carmel Art Association and active in the later part of the 20th Century. Signed works "J. Nordmann". According to the artist, he studied with Paul Conner, Nicolai Fechin, Charles Movalli and Edward Norton Ward. His works were a mixture of traditional impressionism and elements of modernism.

NORTON, LELA N. --- In the early part of the 20th Century, Lela Norton had an art studio in Santa Ana, California. She painted a small impressionist plein air California landscape with flowers. Early Orange County artist. Died in 1946.

NYE, ARTHUR (MRS.) --- Tonalist painter. Early Los Angeles artist. Label on painting reads, "Mrs. Arthur Nye - 2297 W. 23 Street, Los Angeles 18, Calif.

OBERSTEIN, CHUCK (1935-2002) --- Known for his collectible clown paintings and realist portrait work. Chuck Oberstein was known to also have painted Mexican guitar players, abstract scenes of ballet dancers, and rural California landscapes - including rustic barns. Many of his clown subjects can be found in the form of prints. Oberstein's work can be compared to that of William Persona - another collectible clown painter from Southern California in the mid to late 20th Century. Some of Chuck Oberstein's work could also be described as modernist or bordering on abstract.

ODERKIRK, LYLA STRONG --- Painted a school-house landscape scene in watercolor. Active in California in the early part of the 20th Century. Signed works, L.S. Oderkirk.

OFFSTEIN, SHEILA --- Hemet, California artist active during the middle of the 20th Century. Known work is a desert oil titled "Palm Springs Oil by Sheila Offstein, Hemet, Ca."

OLSEN, IRMA --- Painted impressionist landscape scenes of the area around her home. Painted a landscape scene of an earlier Redlands California landscape with orange fruit trees. Known to have lived in the Yucaipa / Redlands area of California. Not much is know about the artist - few paintings are likely to exist.

O'NEILL, FRANK ELISHA (b1893) --- Frank O'Neill was originally from Virginia and was born there in 1893. Frank O'Neill settled in Los Angeles and worked as an engineer for an oil refinery company. He was active in the 1940s in the Carmel / Monterey area as a painter. The work known is of a Carmel coastal view landscape with trees. He was also a member of the Carmel Art Association.

OUMEDIAN, MICHEL (1896-1970) --- Member of the California Art Club. Had a studio in the mid 1960s called the "M. Oumedian Art Studios" which was located at 9132 1/2 So. Western Ave, Los Angeles. His work includes french landscape scenes done in a modernist impressionist style. Signed works "Michel". Lived in Inglewood and Los Angeles and additionally listed with the California Art Club in 1964.

PAINE, EDITH --- Painted an early California mission. Painted small oil paintings in the early part of the 20th Century.

PALMERTON, MURRAY E. --- Painted a series of impressionist desert oil paintings. Label verso reads, "Oil Paintings - Murray E. Palmerton - 9241 - "C" St., Space 43 - Hesperia, California. Works could be described as minimal or post impressionist.

PALOMBI, EDITH --- (1926-2002) Mid Century California watercolorist. Studied art in Germany and settled in Los Angeles. She taught art in Los Angeles in the mid 1980s. In her retirement years she lived and worked in Guadalajara and Vallarta, Mexico. Her watercolors were modernist in style with elements of the watercolor style movement from mid Century California art. Signed works "Edith Palombi". She was known to have shown her works in over 75 art exhibitions.

PARKER, DONALD --- Painted an impressionist flowering mountain landscape. Signed his work "Donald Parker". Mid 20th Century.

PARKER, F.N. --- Mid-Century California realist. According to the artist Grandson, Parker worked for the Velvetone Poster Company for 25 years as a color scheme artist. Known works include landscapes and a painting of Busch Gardens in Van Nuys, California. A talented painter - most of his works are held by the family.

PARKHURST, VIOLET --- Mid-Century California realist. Studied the arts at the Los Angeles State College and in Mexico City. Some of her early work includes paintings of native people, fruit markets and native life (at this time she rented a home in Natal, Brazil and was also a writer). In her early period, she also was known to have painted abstract subject matter such as nude figural works, portraits, cat themes, and horse race scenes. She later became well known for her realist seascape painting and California coastal pieces - her work was published with the Walter Foster art series and in a published 1972 book entitled, 'Parkhurst on Seascapes".

PARSONS, MAXINE --- Active mid 20th Century. Painted small impressionist desert paintings in California.

PASKO, NICK --- Mid-Century realist. Appears to have been active in the Western part of the United States in the late 20th Century. Known works include oil paintings of seascape, landscape, Western subject matter - Grand Canyon. Pasko also painted a series of desert paintings. Possibly Native American - as suggested by the Thunderbird located between his first and last name. He often signed his work "Nick Pasko" or "Nick --Thunderbird symbol-- Pasko". His works could be described as realist with elements of impressionism and California plein air. A talented artist.

PATTERSON, J. MORTON --- Painted a redwood tree forest landscape scene in Northern California. Similar to the work of John Coultrup. Early California artist active in the early part of the 20th Century. from City of Carlsbad records..."Around 1920-21, Eddie began building the large octagonal dining room. He had artist J. Morton Patterson paint 6-by-24-foot murals for each of the eight bays. The one mural that has recently resurfaced actually never hung in the dining room; apparently, it was an extra."

PAYNE, RAYMOND --- early California etcher. Active in the 1930s in the San Francisco area and worked in the etching medium. Known works include city landscape scenes of San Francisco and Eucalyptus tree etchings. A recent etching found is titled "Eucalyptus Trees". Signature on works appears to read, "ry Payne" for Raymond Payne.

PAYTON, MERYLE --- Painted realist coastal impressionist oil paintings. Active in the mid 20th Century. Signed works, "Meryle Payton".

PENNWALTER --- Signed his work Pennwalter. Plein air impressionist landscape painter. Appears to have been active in the the early 1950s. Work known has emphasis on soft lighting and a light impressionist palette.

PENROD, HAL --- Harold Penrod lived and was active as a painter from Forest Falls, California in the mid 20th Century. Active as an art teacher for over 40 years and appears to have passed away in 2008. Painted colorful impressionist landscapes in Southern California. Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Additionally Listed: Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Signed many of his works, "H. Penrod".

PERKINS, MAY --- Painted impressionist coastal view and seascape in oil. A known example includes a brightly colored California coastal scene. Active around 1930 from the Northern California area. Signed works "May Perkins". A talented painter - works appear to be on the rare side.

PERKINS, RALPH R. --- Painted landscapes in the early part of the 20th Century. Active in the Los Angeles area. Lived at 8331 S. Hoover Street in Los Angeles during the 1930s.

PERL, FREDERICK M. --- California late 20th Century modernist. Painted an expressionist series of works after 1959 while living in Santa Barbara, California. Exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Long Beach Museum of Art. Signed works "F.M. Perl".

PERSONA, WILLIAM (1903-1996) --- Known for his Mid-Century approach to clown painting. Many of his works featured emotional clowns looking at the Wall Street Journal newspaper. Persona painted portraits of native people and a few desert landscapes as well. Early in his career he painted Mexican portraits while living in Mexico and teaching art. He was known to have a gallery space located in Laguna Beach, California according to his artist labels located on the back of many of his paintings. While living in Laguna Beach, Persona was also a member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1965). He lived the last part of his life in Hawaii and passed away in 1996.

PETERSON, ALICE E.--- Painted a Eucalyptus California landscape in the early part of the 20th Century. Active in California. A talented painter. Signed works, "Alice E. Peterson".

PHELPS, MILO --- Painted an impressionist landscape in the early part of the 20th Century. Appears to have been active in Southern California. Signed work "Milo Phelps".

PHILLIPS, ADELIA --- Active in the late 1930s in California. Her brightly colored paintings include the California coastline and a Sierra mountain landscape. Painted in oil. Known painting includes a coastal California impressionist scene dated 1938. Signed work "Adelia Phillips". A talented impressionist painter.

PINHEIRO, JANE --- known as "the Poppy Lady". Established the Antelope Valley Wildflower Center in 1963. Painted watercolor and illustrations of wildflowers. Lived in Pasadena in the 1930s helping her mother run a boarding house, she later moved to Antelope valley in the 1940s-50s and became interested in painting the desert flowers in this area. Passed away in 1982. Her body of work of paintings and illustrations (100 pieces) and various large works showed the local flowers in a natural setting.

PISCHNER, GRACE --- Painted small desert and landscape impressionist oil paintings. Active from the San Diego area and was a member of the La Jolla Art Association. Signed works. "G. Pischner".

POHLE, VERNON LEROY VON --- Active in the mid 20th Century in California. Member of the American Institute of Architects. Lived in Riverside, California. Painted fine art in his leisure. A known painting includes a house in Ensenada - Baja, Mexico. A talented impressionist with architectural and modernist influence.

POIST, IVY B. --- Painted desert landscapes in the mid 20th Century. Signed works "Ivy Poist". Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Lived in Palm Springs (1975).

PORTER, JOSEPH P. --- Painted small fauvist impressionist oil painting. Painter, Illustrator, photographer in the 1950s. Active in San Francisco. Artist address on back of painting reads, "Joseph P. Porter, 210 Tocoloma Avenue, San Francisco 24, Calif.

PORTER, MILLBURN --- Millburn Porter lived near Riverside, California and had a studio out of her ranch style home. She was known to have been an art teacher and had a Monday painting class from her studio in the late 1960s. Millburn Porter adapted her name to sound male in order to compete with the painters of that time. One of her former students stated that "she changed her name to that of a man so her paintings would be considered seriously". A talented artist, Millburn Porter painted California landscape, desert paintings, and floral subject matter.

POTTS. EVA KING (1890-1957) --- Eva May King Potts was born and lived the first part of her life in Detroit, Michigan. She lived in Colorado in the 1920s and eventually settled in the the 1930s in Los Angeles, California. During this period she was known to have painted the Palm Springs landscape and small smoke tree paintings. She appears to have had an interest in the medium of watercolor. Eva Potts died in 1957 in Los Angeles. One of our recent finds by this artist was a smoke tree Palm Springs miniature. Biographical information from art historian Edan Hughes and Census records.

POWERS, RUTH --- Ruth Powers Ortlieb. Born in Riverside, Calif. in 1893. Active in San Diego and exhibited there in the late 1920s. In the 30s Ruth Powers taught art in the local San Diego city schools. She was also a member of the San Diego Art Guild and helped to create a group called the San Diego Moderns in the early 1930s. She moved from the San Diego area in the early 1940s and studied with Millard Sheets at Claremont College. Her work includes landscape, still life, modernist figural, and modern genre watercolors.

PRATT, YVONNE --- Painted an impressionist desert oil painting of Anza Borrego. Mid 20th Century artist.

PRINE, BETTY --- Painted California desert paintings in the mid 20th Century. Signed works "Betty Prine". A recently found work includes a desert painting with bright impressionist color and a colorful brush style. A talented desert painter.

PROEHL, CHARLINE --- Painted coastal California scenes. Active in the mid 20th Century. Signed works "C. Proehl" or "Charline Proehl".

PROUTY, JOHN (J.D.) --- Active in California and painted brightly colored watercolors. According to our discussion with the artists grandson "He did live in California for awhile but lived in Oak Park, IL from the 1930's, I think, until he moved to Bellefontain, OH in 1975 or 1976 until he died in 1982. If you can locate the book Malibu Pottery, there is a lot about him in there. He did some tile paintings in the Los Angeles, CA court house." -Ken Prouty. A talented impressionist and colorist. Signed works, "J.D. Prouty".

PURER, EDITH A. --- Painted small desert impressionist oil paintings. Signed works, "Edith Purer". Lived and worked as a science teacher in San Diego area and painted desert landscapes in her leisure. A talented overlooked artist.

PURRUCKER, W.J. --- William Julius Purrucker. Signed works "W.J. Purrucker". Painted colorful desert and coastal impressionist landscape. According to art historian Edan Hughes, William Purrucker was born in Texas on July 1, 1887 and settled in Los Angeles with his parents in 1890. After he married he settled in the Newhall area and was active as a farmer for several years. Purrucker was active as an artist from the city of Glendale and was known to be a cabinet maker and painter from around 1930 until his death on April 3, 1954. A recent painting found by this artist was of a desert scene - also known to exist is a coastal landscape.

RAMAGE, ELIZABETH --- Plein air desert painter. Painted a desert landscape of the Palm Springs area with Yucca trees.

RASH, FREDERICK M. --- Watercolorist and oil painter. Exhibited with the California Art Club ("California Fisherman" - exhibited in 1955 - 46th Annual CAA Exhibition). Known to have studied with and painted with Robert Wood, Millard Sheets, Milford Zornes, Rex Brandt, and Dong Kingman. Active from his studio in Laguna Beach, California. One of his works had an artist card with the following information "Fred and Louise Rash, 31014 Coast Hwy. South Laguna CA 92677. Rash Gallery - oil paintings - L'scapes, S'life, Seascapes, portraits." Signed his work, "Frederick Rash", "Fred Rash", and also "Frederick M. Rash Sr.". Works were impressionist with emphasis on color and modernism.

RASUMOFF, HENRIETTA --- Painted a series of modernist abstract and semi abstract paintings in the mid 20th Century. Many of her works were signed "henri" on the front of the works. Some works bordered a colorist folk style. A standout work is titled "Study in White" which combines her modern colorist approach as well as mid Century California post impressionism. Appears to have been active in Southern California around 1960.

REARDON, EUGENIA --- Painter. Lived on Ocean Avenue in Long Beach, California. Married for thirty years to legendary MLB umpire "Beans" Reardon. Painted a variety of subjects, including outstanding seascapes (some including plaques), and portraits of famous people done from life. Additional subject matter included landscapes, children, fishermen, and winter scenes (Boston). She loved the Anaheim Angels, and was a well-known attendee at games, sitting in the front row. Born in Paris, and raised in Dallas, Texas. Educated in Lausanne, Switzerland, and University of Alabama. Started a national aluminum window company. Some of these windows are in the United Nations Building in New York City. Studied with William Hallewijn in The Netherlands. Painted a portrait of Nancy Reagan which hangs in the White House. Painted in a studio behind her home in Long Beach.

REDMOND, ADA --- impressionist, painted coastal and landscapes in California circa 1955 to 1960s era. Exhibited with the California Art Club in the mid 20th Century. A fine coastal plein air impressionist style painter. Talented artist who painted with nice lighting, color and depth to the artists coastal work. Additionally listed: Calfornia Art Club (1955). Signed work, "Ada Redmond".

REEDER, LYDIA B --- Painted California landscapes in the mid 20th Century. Painted a landscape in 1963. Signed works, "Lydia B. Reeder".

REID, EULALIE --- Active with the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs (1970). Lived in Morongo Valley at that time. REINEMAN, KURT E. --- Kurt Reineman was known to have been active in Hemet, California. Desert landscape painter. Painted minimal color focused desert landscapes in the mid 1940s. One of his paintings reads, "Cathedral City, Calif." on the back of the painting. He often marked his personal catalogue number for the painting on the back.

RENEAU, EDITH --- Painted in watercolor, pastel, and oil. Active from 10217 Alexander Avenue, Southgate, California. Painted California landscapes in the mid 1960s. Signed work, "E. Reneau". Painted impressionist landscape scenes with attention to sunset colors.

RENO, STEVE --- Steven Reno Skero. Painted mid century realist California coastal paintings. Active from 1110 Cuesta Dr. Mountain View, California.

RICE, CLARA --- Painted a desert impressionist landscape in oil. Active in 1960. Signed work "Clara Rice 1960".

RIGGLE, DOROTHY --- California style watercolorist. Active in the mid 20th Century. Signed works, "Dorothy Riggle".

RILEY, A. BLAINE --- California artist who lived at 3575 Fletcher Dr. in Los Angeles in the 1960s and possibly later. A modernist oil of fishermen mending their nets at San Pedro is known to exist.

RITTENHOUSE, M. --- Signed work M. Rittenhouse. Possibly a California painter. Thick impressionist brush work.

ROBBINS, J.W. --- Painted a watercolor of redwoods along the California coast in 1915. Work was framed in Burlingame, California. Signed works "J.W. Robbins".

ROBERTS, ANNETTE --- Mid 20th Century artist. Annette Roberts was known to have had a gallery in the Redlands / Mentone area according to the gallery label verso. She lived for many years in the city of Yucaipa and with her artist husband Gordon Roberts. She also excelled at printmaking. Annette Roberts landscape work was modernist and impressionist in style - her style could be described as leaning toward abstraction. Signed some of her work, "Annette".

ROBERTS, GORDON --- Mid 20th Century artist. Husband of Annette Roberts. Owners of an art gallery in the Redlands / Mentone area of the Inland Empire. Lived in Yucaipa. Many of his works were modernist and very experimental mid 20th Century approach. Some works focused on pointalism and abstractions.

ROBINSON, HELEN M. --- Painted a California coastal scene in the mid 20th Century. Signed "Helen M. Robinson".

ROBSON, CORA HEWES --- According to an address label verso, Cora Robson was active from 1324 Pine Street, Santa Monica California. Dated 1950. She was also known to have painted landscape and mission paintings in the 1940s while living in Riverside, California.

ROBYNS, ANNETTE (1914-1994) --- Fine mid-Century modernist abstract artist from Los Angeles. Annette Robyns studied in New York with Harry Shoulberg. Robyns also studied in Paris with Fernard Leger. In the 1940s she settled in Los Angeles with actor husband Donald Elson. Robyns was active in her studio Elson-Robyns Gallery in the early 1960s. Listed and Exhibited with: Laguna Beach Art Association Gallery - Laguna Beach, The Chabot Gallery in Los Angeles, The Brand Library and Art Center - Los Angeles, Westwood Art Association. Also known to have produced a few etchings. Most of her later works were modern colorist abstract oil paintings. A well rounded artist, Robyns was also known for being a working ceramist, sculptor, and silversmith.

RODGER, ISABELLE --- Born and active in Detroit, MI and moved to California in the later part of her life. She was a fashion illustrator for the Detroit Free Press. Later in California she painted landscape, birds, and portraits. She was known to have painted a landscape scene of Yosemite called, "Yosemite In Springtime". A work by this artist is available via ListedArtist.com.

RODRIGUES, JOSE --- Painted an impressionist coastal scene of crashing waves and rocks. Active in San Diego. Painted from his studio in Lakeside, California. Mid 20th painter.

ROME, RAY --- Raymond Rome painted a series of beach scene paintings during his travels. One titled, "The Sunday Clam Digger" and the other titled on the back "The Holiday". Appears to have been active in the Northern California area - mid 20th Century 1960s era.

ROOT, MABEL --- Painted desert landscapes in the mid 20th Century. Signed work, "Mabel Root".

ROSENTHAL, ROSE --- Rose Rosenthal was a member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Painted impressionist landscapes. She lived in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1960s and was a member of the Desert Art Center. In the 1970s she continued to paint in Palm Springs and lived there as well.

ROSEME, DUNCAN --- Born in Haiti and became active in the modern art California galleries in the 1990s. Active as a painter and ceramist. Studied at the Arts Students League in New York. Known for his work of the "dancing people" and market activity paintings. Currently active in Palm Springs, California.

ROSS, GREG --- Active in Pasadena. Painted colorful plein air impresssionist landscapes. Appears to have been active in the later part of the 20th Century.

ROSS, L.E. --- Painted a scene of Long Point Palos Verde coast. Impressionist painter - mid 20th Century California. Exhibited with the San Pedro Art Association. Active from 25022 Pennsylvania Ave, Lomita. Signed works "L.E. Ross". Work exhibited with the SPAA is titled, "Long Point". Also known to have been a member of the Spectrum Club (Long Beach, Calif.).

ROWBURY, LAMAR --- A vintage mid 20th Century example of his work includes a coastal landscape. Known for his Western subject matter, Indian encampment, pastoral and landscape painting. Active with the Los Padres Artist Guild in Santa Maria, California. Works sold and offered at Best Of The West Auctions in Colorado Springs, CO. Member of important family of listed Western artists. Signed his works in full, "LaMar Rowbury".

RUE, MELVA H. --- Active in Laguna Beach, California. Painted small coastal painting in Laguna Beach. Her works were sold from Laguna Studio - Gallery at 1390 Coast Highway, Laguna Beach in the mid part of the 20th Century. Her small works could be described as similar to Bennett Bradbury. A talented coastal landscape painter.

RUSHALL, DAYLE --- Southern California sculptor and painter active in the late 20th Century. Active in Hawaii and had a studio gallery there. Oil paintings include use of pointalism and a modern approach to his work (one example is titled "Lake Como Scenic", dated 1994). Active into the late 1990s. SCHADE, LELA --- Active as an artist and teacher in Orange County and Riverside County. Listed: Desert Art Center Artists, ListedArtist.com Fine Art Reference - Rediscovered California Artists. An active member of the Desert Art Center - Palm Springs, California circa 1965. Painted scenes of Native Americans - portrait and group scenes, as well as desert paintings. Signed works, "Schade".

SCHMIDT, EUGENE (1919-2007) --- California realist painter from Santa Barbara. Active at the sidewalk art gallery sales along the beach at Santa Barbara for many years. Signed most of his work "E.S.". Known for painting the California mission, European landscape scenes (Germany and Switzerland), sunset coastal scenes, boats. Exhibited at the Santa Barbara Art Fair (1978). Recently passed away in 2007.

SCHMITT, JOSEPHINE --- Painted landscape with Eucalyptus trees in the early to mid 20th Century. Talented artist.

SCHNIER, ANNA (1895-1958) --- Plein air watercolorist. Signed her work, "Anna Schnier". Active in Los Angeles, California. According to Edan Hughes she was born in Ohio and grew up in Cincinnati. She moved to Los Angeles and painted watercolors until her death in 1958.

SCHONFELDT, FRANCES - Plein air California impressionist. Appears to have been active in the 1930s and 1940s. Her work includes plein air desert landscapes and California landscape scenes. Her work could be described as similar to that of Nevada Wilson.

SCHUMACHER, Marjorie --- Also known as Marj Schumacher or M. Schumacher. Painted Palm Springs area desert landscapes. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1965-1975).

SCHUMACHER, M.W. (Schumacher, Maude) --- Resident of San Diego during the 1950s. Lived at 4537 Saratoga in that city. Painted in oil scenes of the California coast, as well as local deserts. This does not appear to be the same artist as either Marjorie Shumacher, who exhibited with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center and lived in that area in the 1960s (see above), or Mae Schumacher, a California artist who lived in Los Angeles in 1913.

SCHWANBECK, W.H. --- Painted brightly colored California landscapes in the mid part of the 20th Century. Signed works, "W.H. Schwanbeck".

SCOTT, ROGER --- It appears that Roger Scott may have lived at one time in the Inland Empire area of Southern California. Many of his works showcase the desert clouds and landscape scenes around this area. His best works seem to have the extra emphasis on clouds. Works by this artist often were located and found in Pomona and Colton, CA which suggests that he may have lived in this area during the 1930s and 1940s. Signed works "Roger Scott". A talented early California desert painter.

SEGO, BESSIE MONTGOMERY --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the mid 1960s. Painted floral still life. Active from her studio in Yucaipa, California. Additionally Listed: Desert Art Center Artists 1965 (Palm Springs, California).

SEVEY, MABEL B. --- Active from 122 So. Encinitas Ave. Apt.1, Monrovia, CA according to address label. Painted in oil - works were somewhat tonalist in style. Mid 20th Century California artist. Signed works, "Sevey".

SHADDIX, BILL --- California and Arizona artist. Bill Shaddix is known for his nature based landscapes as well as Western and genre paintings. His early works include Southern California landscape and coastal paintings. Works shown in: Samuels and Southwest Art. Member of the Desert Art Center - Palm Springs, California (1965). Signed his works, "Bill Shaddix" and some early works "B.J. Shaddix".

SHARP, WALT --- Painted a colorist impressionist scene of the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1957.

SHAW, MARIE H. (1874- ) --- Painted a still life of coconuts. Originally from Minnesota and was born there in 1874 according to art historian Edan Hughes. She lived at one time in Texas and became a resident of Sonora, California in 1910. The coconut still life located appears to be from her California period when she was a resident of Sonora. Antique frame has an early Orr's San Diego, CA gallery label.

SHEBLAK, FLORENCE (1877-1946) --- According to art historian Edan Hughes, Sheblak was born in 1877 in Wisconsin. She was married to Charles Sheblak and lived in Chicago in the early part of her life. She later settled in California and around 1930 she was living in Los Angeles. Florence Sheblak died on Feb.21, 1946. The known work is signed in caps "F. Sheblak" and is a colorful impressionist landscape with trees.

SINGER, MARGE --- Active in the mid 20th Century with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Listed: Desert Art Center Artists, National League of American Pen Women, Alumni Association of the Art Institute of Chicago. Modernist painter.

SIPOS, RAYMOND -- Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1939. Sipos settled in California and studied with Benjamin McGrath. He originally worked as an engineer and mechanic at Cal Tech and became serious as an artist when exhibiting his work and getting a great deal of attention for his work. His paintings has been featured in national art publications such as Southwest Art. He ranked 30 out of 500 in a national competition for marine painting sponsored by the Franklin Mint. His main focus was on realist seascape and California coastal scenes. Active in the later part of the 20th Century.

SITTER, LARRY --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center in the mid 1960s. Painted impressionist desert paintings. Signed works "Sitter". Active in the Palm Springs, California area along with other important desert painters such as Joseph Frey, Carl Bray, William Krehm, Wilton McCoy, and Bill Bender (in the mid 1960s these painters captured the beauty of the desert around Palm Springs). Listed in Members of the Desert Art Center - Palm Springs, California (1965). One of his known works is titled verso, "North From Deep Canyon". Additional works include various desert scenes and California landscape.

SLOAN, WILLIAM --- Signed works "W.A. Sloan". Active from Ventura California in the mid part of the 20th Century. Painted colorful floral still life. A known work includes an Asian theme floral still life and also colorful fauvist style impressionist landscape. Resident of Ventura in the 1950s. A talented artist.

SMERBER, JoAnn --- Painted a series of still lifes on wood squares. Active from Montgomery Creek, California. Folk Artist. Active circa 1970.

SMITH Jr., CORNELIUS C. --- Illustrator and painter. Painted in oil and watercolor. Signature variations include, "Corney Smith", "C. Smith", "Smith". Cornelius Smith main output as an artist appeared to be in watercolor. According to some further research Smith came from a military background which seemed to influence many of his works..."his father Colonel Cornelius Cole Smith, an enlisted man in the Indian Wars, won a Medal of Honor, and commanded Fort Huachuca in 1918 and 1919. His son, Cornelius C. Smith, Jr., returned to Fort Huachuca in the 1970s to serve as the post's centennial coordinator." Many Corney's work include nostalgic views and drawings of men in battle, the Old West, animals, and military themes. Several of his early watercolor and drawings were of animals and more detailed in form and style. Around 1940 his work ventured into watercolor and his paintings became more brightly colored and impressionist. His work varied from a looser mid Century California style watercolor approach to the Western cowboy subject matter with more of an illustrative quality. Some of his book work includes: "A Hell of a Christmas" 219 By Colonel Cornelius C. Smith, Jr." and "Crook and Crazy Horse by CC Smith Jr - 1966 - written and illustrated by CORNELIUS C. SMITH, JR." A talented artist, many of his works recently appeared in the Inland Empire / Redlands area.

SMITH, R.P. --- Landscape painter. Realist painter of the Sierra mountain range. An oil by this artist was sold at a major auction house in California (2002).

SOUTH, MARGARET --- Painted a small impressionist landscape titled, "Early Spring in California - Mt San Antonio in the Distance - from a painting by Benjamin C. Brown". Early California artist.

SOUTHERN, DOROTHY --- Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Painted an impressionist desert landscape circa 1965. California plein air desert painter.

SPENCER, WILL --- (1893-1981) Painted the deserts of California and also the Colorado landscape. Originally did a series of pencil works and after 1945 painted in oil and watercolor. Will Spencer was mainly focused on desert and mountain landscape. He was known to have painted the Palm Springs desert around 1950. Plein air painter - focused on watercolor scenes of the Palm Springs desert area. Exhibited: Yucaipa Library. Also known to have only painted a few hundred pieces. Signed his works "Will S. Spencer" or Will Spencer.

SPRENGER, DOROTHY --- Born 1931 and from Illinois. Active in Southern California around 1970. Painted the California missions and also desert landscapes. Known to have studied under Robert Wood, Ted Degrazia, Dick Phillips, and Adrien Hansen. Signed works in full "Dorothy Sprenger".

STANLEY, R.C. --- Modernist, mid 20th Century artist. Most of his pieces have been seen in the California area so we are assuming that the artist was from California or worked in California during the 1960s to early 80s period. Signed work, "Stanley" and also signed verso, "R.C. Stanley". Known for his post impressionist semi abstract style, his subject matter includes: Western landscapes, English countryside landscape, cowboys and horses - wagontrain, landscapes, figures and portraits.

STAPINSKI, F.Z. --- Painted an impressionist desert scene of Cajon Pass (San Bernardino side). Active from 111 W. Pioneer Ave, Redlands, CA. Signed work F.Z. Stapinski.

STEAD, LOIS (1913-1997) --- Lois Stead lived and was active as an oil painter in Los Angeles. Active Circa 1960s. Painted a modernist scene of Los Angeles. Known work includes a surreal and modern depiction of downtown L.A.. Signed works "Lois Stead".

STEELE, ROBERTA --- Painted an impressionist desert landscape. Late 20th Century.

STETTER, AL --- Born 1907 and died in 2008. Known for animation, visual effects artist and fine art painter. Active from Burbank, California and known to have painted a somewhat large series of oil paintings -many numbered on the back. In 1957, Al worked as an animator for The Truth About Mother Goose and Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color (1956-57). In his leisure he painted rural landscapes and barn scenes of California. He also painted other rural areas such as Wyoming and various American farm scenes. A talented overlooked 20th Century painter.

STEINBACH, ? --- Signed works "Steinbach". Active from National City (San Diego), California. This artist appears to have been interested in desert landscapes - another recent piece located was of the same subject matter. Painted circa 1965 - 1975 era. According to artist stamp he had a studio located at 1235 E. 8th St. - Steinbach's Artists Materials and Frames.

STEPHENS, L. --- Painted a small plein air impressionist desert painting. Active in the early part of the 20th Century (around 1930).

STERLING, GENE (died in 1986) --- mid Century California painter. Producer of low budget Hollywood 60s era films "Teenagers from Outer Space" and 1961 "Halfway to Hell". Active in Laguna Beach as a painter in the 1960s and 70s. Studied under Leon Franks and Ben Bevill (also a Laguna Beach artist). His work includes modernist abstract style painting with bright colors and mystical themes. Sterling also painted coastal subject matter and matador themed paintings. Signed works, "Gene Sterling".

STEVENSON, B. --- Painted a small plein air desert miniature of the Palm Springs - Palm Desert landscape.

STEWART, A.V. --- Painted a Eucalyptus landscape with building/home in the background -arts and crafts era feel. Signed work "A.V. Stewart". A talented artist - appears to have been active in California in the early part of the 20th Century.

STRAND, ORA --- Painted brightly colored desert landscapes in California in the mid 20th Century. Signed works, "Ora Stand".

STRAWBRIDGE, EDWARD --- (b1903-1999). Active from 58 Peninsula Road - Belvedere, California. Painted a landscape scene in oil of Santa Cruz fisherman in 1941. Also painted boat scenes in watercolor (bay scene of San Rafael boats in 1941). Active with the Palo Alto Art Club in 1933.

SUMNER, CHARLES KAISER --- Charles Kaiser Sumner designed over fifty local middle class residences in Palo Alto (1916-1941). He also built on the Stanford Campus. As an architect he built houses in Berkeley, the Claremont Club, and several buildings in Sacramento as well. He and his wife Alice Sumner were members of the Palo Alto Art Club. His work includes brightly colored landscape mostly painted with pallette knife. Signed work, "Chas K. Sumner".

SUTHERLAND, JESSIE --- Active with the Palm Springs Desert Art Center 1964-65. Lived in Arcadia, California. Painted bright and colorful California landscapes in oil. Signed works in full "Jessie Sutherland".

SWANSEN, VERN --- Active in the Central Coast and settled in Santa Barbara. He was the curator of education at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (1961-71) and past president of the Santa Barbara Art Association. Also taught watercolor at Cal Poly. Architecture was his focus of study and was chosen as the most distinguished faculty member (1987 Cal Poly).

SYKES, ROZZELL --- In the mid 1960s Sykes was the co-founder of St. Elmo Village along with his nephew Roderick Sykes. The art village was located in the mid-city Los Angeles area and is now regarded as a multi-cultural landmark. Sykes vision in the late 60s was for St. Elmo Village to bring together African and Latin American culture through art and self expression. Rozzell Sykes work was modern - bright colors with strong black or brown backgrounds; often of close up views of people, faces, and nudes. His modernist paintings were featured in his gallery on the Sunset Strip (May 1968 full page ad with American Artist Magazine). Sykes could be considered one of the few first modernist African American California artists during this period. Sykes was also a muralist (noted for the mural at Adams at Arlington, Los Angeles). His work was also featured in an exhibit along with Betye Saar, Daniel LaRue Johnson, Charles Wilbert White, and Herman Kofi Bailey, Jr. at the California African American Museum (African American Artists in Los Angeles, a Survey Exhibition: Reaction (1945-1965)).

TAGARIS, ANDREW ATHAN--- Active in the 1950s with the California Art Club. Painted mid century impressionist abstractions with palette knife approach. Art demonstration with the CAC February 1958; Club Archives: Vol. 17 No. 5 [Should be Vol. 16].

TANGE, ESTHER --- Active in Laguna Beach, California in the mid 20th Century. Known works include a brightly colored desert oil painting and also a California landscape scene with wagon in the distance. Signed works "E. Tange". A talented impressionist.

TANNER, MARGARET --- Painted an impressionist plein air style coastal painting. Appears to have been active in California in the early part of the 20th Century.

TAUBENHEIM, CLARENCE --- Active in Santa Cruz in the mid 20th Century. Member of the Santa Cruz Art League. Signed some of his works, "C.T." and painted landscape scenes of old Santa Cruz - a recent known example is titled on the back states - "Old Santa Cruz" and has the artist business card on the back of the work. Elements of fauvism and a loose impressionist style can be seen in the artists work.

TAYLOR, FLORA ELEANOR --- Painted an early plein air watercolor of Rio Nido, California. Signed works, "Flora Eleanor Taylor". A talented watercolorist.

THOMAS, DILLIE --- Contemporary California landscape painter. Works include large oils of the desert in the Palm Springs area.

TILLEY, PAUL R.--- Painted a coastal impressionist oil painting of the Laguna Beach coastline. Active in Laguna Beach, California. Active in the mid 20th Century from a gallery space at 1121 Glenneyre, Laguna Beach California (circa 1955-60). Signed works, "Paul Tilley".

TOBIAS, MARTIN --- Talented California etcher and printmaker. Born in 1932 in New York. Studied with Hans Hoffman. In 1966, he moved to Riverside and became art director for Bourns electronics. In the late 1970s he focused on etchings and continued to develop his unique and delicate style of printmaking. Signed his prints, "Martin Tobias". A talented and overlooked mid Century California printmaker.

TONJES, ROBERT --- Born in New Jersey and later settled in Los Angeles to pursue art. He later moved to Sacramento and was also active as a painter there. He won awards at art shows in Northern California and sold his works in Eureka and Sacramento galleries. Studied art at the University of Southern California. Studied with Robert Frame and Keith Crown. Active in the mid to late 20th Century.

TOWNE, EUNICE --- Painted a rocky California coastal painting - titled "Hidden Cove -1966". Colorful brush work. Active mid 20th Century. Signed work "E. Towne".

TOWNSEND, ISABEL SCOTT - Painted impressionist California landscapes in oil. One painting could be described as similar to that of Sam Hyde Harris (old building in California landscape). Another landscape was of a Sierra landscape with bold bright brush work and done in the plein air style. One was dated 1947 and both appeared to be from that period. A talented painter.

TRAMMELL, LOLA E. --- Plein air painter. Painted in Monterey California and appears to have been active as an artist there. (Monterey Past and Present is marked on the back of the panel as well). Located work was painted in 1948. Signed work "L.E. Trammell" - letters LE are comingled. Lola Trammell was active from her studio at 11 Via Paraiso, Monteregio, Monterey, Calif.

TRAWICK, MARY S. --- Known for her abstract oils, including cityscapes. Has lived in Oceanside, California, and may still live there. Signed her work "Mary Trawick".

TERASAKI, RYO --- Realist desert painter. Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center. Resident of Downey, California. Signed her work "Ryo". Painted floral still life, seascape, and desert scenes.

TUBBS, S. --- Painted a desert impressionist painting in the mid 20th Century. According to label verso S. Tubbs was based in Banning, California. A talented painter.

TUCK, ?? --- Signed works "Tuck". Painted a colorful plein air desert impressionist oil painting.

UPTON, EUGENE SANFORD --- Painted an impressionist desert landscape. Signed works "Eugene Sanford Upton". Active mid 20th Century.

VALENTE, CARL --- Born in Ohio and attended the Cleveland Art Institute. He eventually settled in Los Angeles and worked with the L.A. Herald Examiner. His work was seen by many in the form of color inserts with the Herald Examiner. In the late 1970s and 1980s Carl Valente concentrated on painting fine art - American landscape scenes and focused on archway painting and California mission scenes. He was also known to have painted English cottage and village scenes and floral still life. Some would say that his English school paintings resemble the paintings of Thomas Kinkade.

VANCE, NORMAN KINGSFORD --- mid 20th Century and Contemporary California impressionist. Some of his late 70s work includes a painting titled, "Reseda Park - Norman Kingsford Vance - August 1979". Currently living in Oregon and sells work from his gallery Norman K. Vance Gallery in Hood River, OR. Painted in pastel and also known to have done illustration work during this period.

VENUTA, BENAY (1911-1995) --- Hollywood actress and Broadway star, Benay Venuta. Painted in her leisure. Signed her works, "Benay V." Known painting to exist is a portrait done in a loose impressionist style. American actress, singer, dancer.

VERDULT, WILLIAM --- Mid Century modernist. Work was shown in a Catalina Island Exhibit and at the Laguna Art Festival (1967). Studied with Danny Garcia and Stanley Brooks at the Carmel School of Art. He was also known to have taught art at the Carmel School of Art. He had a gallery studio in Carmel (1967). Known for his King Tut treasures exhibition which included a collection of paintings, gold, diamonds, and precious stones. He later settled in Palm Springs, California.

VETTER, W. --- Fine mid Century realist active around 1965. A finely painted realist work of the California coast is known to exist. Signed work, "W. Vetter".

WAGNER, A.J. --- Early California impressionist artist - work could be described as similar to Joseph Englehart.

WALFORD, KENNETH --- Active in the mid 20th Century. Painted a large realist desert painting. The depth and realism in the work could be described as similar to the paintings of James Swinnerton.

WALKER, GEORGE M. --- Painted small floral impressionist paintings in the 1970s. Label on the back reads "Spanish Village Art Center - Balboa Park San Diego, California". Known to have painted with Alfred Mitchell.

WALLEM, IRMA --- Painted a California landscape with tall tree as the focus - nice lighting and color. A talented artist that appears to have been active from Northern California and born in 1908. Signed works, "Irma Wallem".

WARD, SALLY --- Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center (1975). Lived in Cathedral City. Watercolorist and oil painter. Painted impressionist landscape and floral still life.

WARNE, ETHEL --- Active in 1944 and 1945 in the Palm Springs area. Painted colorful impressionist desert oil paintings of the Palm Springs area and a St. Jacinto mountain desert landscapes. Signed work "E. Warne".

WASTIER, GEORGES --- etcher. One of his titled work - Desert Sentinels, Palm Springs.

WATKINS, LORRAINE --- Painter who lived, and may still live, in Chula Vista, California. Extant works include oil painting of seascape. Signed her paintings "Watkins".

WEEKES, CHARLES --- California watercolorist. Painted a mission scene with crowd gathering in front - a talented artist. Signed works "Charles Weekes". Appears to have lived and was active in the San Diego area.

WEIDHOFER, KARL VON --- Collectible California artist, desert and landscape painter. Active in the mid to late 20th Century, circa 1970-75. Many of his works were brightly colored California scenes with emphasis on nature, the desert landscape, and coastal views. Signed works, "Weidhofer" and also "Karl Von Weidhofer". According to the artist card found on the back of many of his works, he was active from Star Rt.2, Box869, Jackson California 95642. He also active from his studio at Toyon Rd., Pine Grove California. Painted realist landscapes. A talented mid 20th Century painter.

WHEELER, G.L. (Wheeler, George) --- Painted an impressionist California mission painting. Active in the early to mid 20th Century. Signed work, "G.L. Wheeler". Active in Laguna Beach, California. Also listed in South Coast News, 11-27-1936.

WELSH, MARIANA --- Painted expressionist watercolors - geometric modernist town views and California landscapes using bright colors -several of her works include the color pink. Her could be described as bordering modern and folk art. Signed works Mariana Welsh.

WHITE, DORIS (1924-) --- Born 1924 in Wisconsin. Painted modernist California watercolors. Mid 20th Century artist. Semi abstract landscape. Member of the California Watercolor Society. Also a member of the National Academy of Design and American Watercolor Society. Signed work, "Doris White".

WHITTED, IVANHOE - Painted an early California impressionist oil titled, "Mountain Splender" (sic). Signed in pencil on the back in full "IVANHOE WHITTED". A talented impressionist. One painting has come up for auction but no other works seem to have appeared.

WILKES, HELEN T. --- Appears to have lived in Upland, California and painted fine art in her leisure. The Wilkes family owned some important historical building in the Inland Empire -"The Vogue and Fox Theaters were both owned by the Helen T. WIlkes Company Trust". Her work was modern with a colorist impressionist style. Signed works, "Helen T. Wilkes". Works by this artist appear to be rare.

WILLIAMS, G.E. --- Painted a plein air landscape of Palm Springs, California in 1943. Signed work "G.E. Williams".

WILLIAMS, JANE --- Circa 1945 California eucalyptus landscape in oil is known to exist.

WILLIAMS, JOHN EDWARD --- Painted a small colorful California landscape. Active in the early 1930s. Signed works, "John Edward Williams". Early California artist.

WILLIAMS, LAURENCE --- Active from Beverly Hills in the mid 20th Century. Painted a California rural landscape with barn and farm animals - somewhat of a primitive feel and strong emphasis on color. According to back of work he was active from 416 N. Bedford, Beverly Hills CA.

WILSON, MARGARET M. --- Painted an impressionist Pasadena landscape in the late 1960s. Titled, "Arroyo Seco Gold". Work could be described as similar to Sam Hyde Harris. Signed works, "M. Wilson".

WISE Jr., WILLIAM D. --- Active from 12428 Pomerdado Court, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego -California. Painted in oil and acrylics. Painted small desert and colorful landscapes. Signed works, "Wise". Some interesting history regarding William Wise and David Dryden..."One of Dryden's most significant projects of the war year of 1918 was the house which he built for May L. Wise, widow of William Wise, Jr, a former officer of the La Jolla Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Wise commissioned David Dryden to design and build a house for her on a lot at 4315 Avalon Drive in Mission Hills. The house, constructed of lath and plaster and hollow tile, was an unusual design for Dryden, echoing an austere Mission Revival style. The Wise house was a watershed in the work of David Dryden." --credit to the Journal of San Diego History.

WOBBS, DOROTHY J. --- Painted a brightly colored California coastal in pastel. Born in 1894 or 1896..and died in 1997. She was active from Alameda and Oakland, California. Active as an artist around 1935. Signed works, "Dorothy Wobbs". One of her located works had an original label on the back from Berkeley art store "SWASEY'S".

WOLSETH, JAMES --- Wolseth, J.K.. Active in the mid 20th Century. Painted desert impressionist paintings. One titled, "Desert Verbenas In The Morning Light" with artist information "by J.K. Wolseth, Cathedral City 92234,. Calif. April 1967". Member of the Palm Springs Desert Art Center.

WOODWARD, WARREN --- Born in Australia, Warren Woodward became active in the United States after World War 2 when he moved to California. Woodward became a master printmaker and was known for his semi-abstract to cubist influenced works. He produced many embossed serigraphs and original oil paintings while in California. His work was sold through Van Amstel Company in Culver City. This label is often found on the back of his work. He also sold his work in Tucson, Arizona via Rosequist Galleries. He was known to have moved back to Australia but returned to California in 1960. It was during this period in which he produced some fine oil paintings with cubist and modern influences. A very talented painter, printmaker, and overlooked mid-Century artist.

WRUCK, DOROTHY --- Active from Morongo Valley (Palm Springs) area in the mid 20th Century. Her work consists of small California desert landscape paintings. Wruck's style was a bright plein air style and captured the mid Century desert landscape near Palm Springs. Signed many of her works "D. Wruck". A talented overlooked early desert painter.

WYPER, VIRGINIA --- Watercolorist. Award winning artist. Active from Pacific Grove California. Known for prints and watercolors. Additionally Listed: Los Angeles Printmaking Society, Southbay Watercolor Society. Signed works, "Virginia Wyper". Painted Pacific Grove / Monterey Bay area in watercolor.

YANCEY, HUGH H. --- Lived in West Los Angeles according to artist stamp on the back of the painting. Painted landscape and Oregon scenes -works could be described as similar to those of John Coultrup and what some describe as "speed" painters.

ZIKE, C.V. --- Early California artist. Work is similar to J.A. Coultrup or John Delane. Signed work "C.V. Zike 1897". Appears to have been active in Los Angeles.
