In the mid 1960s Rozzell Sykes was the co-founder of St. Elmo Village along with his nephew Roderick Sykes. The art village was located in the mid-city Los Angeles area and is now regarded as a multi-cultural L.A. landmark. Sykes vision in the late 60s was for St. Elmo Village to bring together African and Latin American culture through art and self expression. Rozzell Sykes work was modern - bright colors with strong black or brown backgrounds; often of close up views of people, faces, and nudes. His modernist paintings were featured in his gallery on the Sunset Strip (May 1968 full page ad with American Artist Magazine) - and can be considered one of the few first modernist African American California artists during the period. Sykes was also a muralist (noted for the mural at Adams at Arlington, Los Angeles). His work was also featured in an exhibit along with Betye Saar, Daniel LaRue Johnson, Charles Wilbert White, and Herman Kofi Bailey, Jr. at the California African American Museum (African American Artists in Los Angeles, a Survey Exhibition: Reaction (1945-1965)). Our featured examples are typical of his expressionist and modern approach to fine art.
